The first episode to pair up Price and Bee, so looking forward to that. 1995 is way past when I stopped watching TOTP or listening to the Top 40 so this will a journey of discovery rather than a reminisce. I expect to not recognize about 80% of the tunes.

No mention of World Cup yet, maybe waiting for it to finish before doing a reaction to England's run, etc.

They are great together, I think much better than Bee and Taylor anyways, which seemed very awkward. One of the best yet.

The Michael Jackson discussion is difficult but excellent. I hadn't realized that the autopsy confirmed that he really did have vitiligo.

That was public knowledge well before his death, wasn't it?

I wish I hadn't heard Nishlord's porn letter while I was sitting in the U-Bahn.

It was revealed when he was interviewed by Oprah but widely disbelieved (including by me, I must admit) because it just seemed so obviously convenient given the other changes that were clearly cosmetic and driven by body dysmorphia, such as the nose.

That Boyzone cover of Father and Son has ruined my weekend.

I'm kind of glad Price gave a more nuanced opinion on Britpop here, even if it is based on tedious knee-jerk, anti-Americanism. Both Parkes and Stubbs are way over exuberant in their condemnation of it, giving far too much importance to the scene and it's long term influence on wider culture.

But he also stressed that Britpop had jumped the shark by 1995, which is undoubtedly true, and Blur became better after this period.

Few would deny otherwise, it's almost a universally accepted view. I was talking about the earlier period when it hadn't yet become standardised/Blur vs Oasis.

I like Sarah Bee’s take on it.

And I really like Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. Way more than Blur or Oasis. Two basses!

'By' 1995? Wouldn't agree with that at all. Many of the leading acts put out their strongest albums that year.

1996 was the year that it dissipated. In some acts' cases, for the better.

I had fond memories of Ned's Atomic Dustbin until I bought a compilation for £1. Turned out they weren't as good as I remembered.

It's not all gold, to be sure.

Just finished listening to it. Brilliant episode, really good discussion and anecdotes and whoever wrote that porn letter was a genius. An actual genius.

I caught up over three spells yesterday, really good episode - partly because the contributors were given space to really go for their areas of interest - Price on Britpop (and Romo!) and Bee on Michael Jackson - with Al and the other contributor sitting back and letting them get on with it. It's often a sign of a good episode when it takes them an hour-odd to get to the actual TOTP episode and this time we had the porn tales and the Britpop background building it up nicely.

The last one was the first I listened to, and the only one I am old enough to remember watching from the list of available episodes. I am completely hooked though.

With the wife being into Love Island, I've found that having these podcasts on my earphones has made that bearable. I've always been a bit of a fan of the 80s so listening to those ones has been quite eye-opening.

I love the ease at which Al Needham presents them and all of the guests I've heard so far (wingco, Neil Kulcarni (sic), Sarah Bee, Simon Price and Taylor Parkes - is that all of them?) have been interesting and knowledgable, it's really easy listening.

I'm currently listening to episode 2 (9th February 1984) but not quite up to the start of the show yet.

22.1.76, Stubbs and Bee. Excellent discussion in the first hour (as far as I've reached at this point) but the technical quality on Stubbs' connection is annoying: lots of crackling, for example, from around 50 minutes in.

I'm 25 mins in and got engrossed earlier. Will be listening to the rest when the wife's back from work and puts her soaps on the telly and I genuinely can't wait to do so.

I tried to give money but haven’t been mentioned, so either it didn’t go through or wasn’t enough or they just don’t like me.
