I'm not back in town for the FSV game on November 25th. Oh well. Though like you, I'd have maybe gone out of curiosity. Looking at it from another perspective, for FSV right now €15k is very necessary money.

Match resumed after banners were removed. I wonder on what grounds the protesters were told they had to remove them: "This is Germany - there is no freedom of expression at fourth division football games."

Talking of flags, this one has appeared at the Sportpark this year. And before you ask, the owner of said flag is German.

German FA made a statement about respecting the right to free speech, and the Chinese foreign ministry promptly responded by saying that guests should be accorded "mutual respect". The Chinese U-20 delegation has remained silent and just disappeared back to their training camp in Thuringia without attending the press conference after the match in Mainz.

There will very probably be more Tibet flags at the match in Frankfurt this weekend. The clubs participating will probably be asking themselves if it's really worth all the hassle for 15 grand... and the DFB is probably considering calling the whole thing off if the events in Mainz are repeated in the matches before the winter break.

Game in Frankfurt off, and the next two pre-Xmas games too, due to fear of "escalation" of the situation - as 11 Freunde points out, the only ones escalating the situation were the Chinese players. Seems likely the whole sorry project will be axed.

Plus, it was only €7,500 - the €15k figure was for the two originally planned home and 'away' games.

It's all gone very quiet about this now. The Chinese team have returned home and as yet there has been no announcement from the DFB about the postponed/cancelled matches, or about what will happen after the winter break.

Wormatia Worms came out with a statement to the effect they trusted that the DFB would fulfil their contractual obligations and pay the €15k to the clubs that agreed to participate, regardless of whether the games take place or not, as their official budget for the season included that amount. Meanwhile, the news filtered out today that Hoffenheim are setting up some sort of cooperation arrangement with Meizhou Hakka FC from China and will receive several million Euros in return for helping them set up a youth academy. The article makes it clear that Hoffenheim had been vocal supporters of the DFB plans: no wonder, seeing as the man pulling the strings is also still involved behind the scenes at SAP, which has invested huge amounts in China over the last decade.

My definite impression is that the Chinese team will not be coming back to complete its fixture obligations. There will be an article about their single game at TSV Schott Mainz in 11 Freunde in about ten years time, and you'll think, "Oh yeah, what the hell was all that about again?"

There is an article in the latest 11 Freunde... including the information that the DFB and some of the clubs are seriously considering playing the remaining matches behind closed doors. Fucking idiots.

The whole charade has now officially been cancelled. Schott Mainz received the agreed €15k, as they were the only club to actually host a match against the China U-20 side.

The other teams will receive €5k each as compensation for any inconvenience caused. Stuttgart, Hoffenheim and Freiburg reserves, and FCA Walldorf, are donating their money to be distributed to the other clubs, while Mainz II will be donating to local amateur sides.

Just noticed a statement on the DFB website refuting allegations made in a recent Wirtschaftswoche article, to the effect that a German FA delegation recently travelled to China to explain why this U-20 project had failed, and to officially apologise for this - and that the apology had been demanded by some Bundesliga clubs who feared that their economic interests were being damaged by the fallout from the failure of the project.

According to the DFB, this 'is absolutely not the case... the only reason for the trip was to sign off on a cooperation project with a Chinese tech company'.

Of course. Whereas when sixth division FC Lörrach wanted to play against Tibet, the local FA - after initially approving the fixture - pulled the plug on it.
