        Triffic.
Nice payday for the club (and the local polis) but a bit too familiar - we had the four games against them in the FA Cup in the mid 1990s and more recently a trip to Sunderland in the same competition. Add in the two games in the league in 1985-86 and that's seven times we've played them competitively since we last played Newcastle, which was most people's dream draw. I'd have preferred Villa away, never been there and not played them since the 1970s. Still, can't complain too much.

I'd guess it's to do with seeding - in the seeded group West Brom lie in the northern half of that group of teams, whilst Wolves (and Burton) are in the southern half of the unseeded group.

As a special bonus for not being on the telly, Blackburn vs Burnley is a midweek bubble match for the travelling supporters.

Who's excited for the entry of the big clubs in the third round draw later this week? Well it'll take place in Beijing at 4.15am UK time.

Was about to post the same ridiculous news.

Meanwhile, Cup fever isn't exactly gripping the north of England, with only approx. 5,700 tickets sold for Carlisle v Sunderland as of yesterday - Sunderland still have some of their 1,500 allocation available today.

Did anyone think that League Cup draws in the early 90s were clearly fixed to produce ties between two Big Five clubs (as they were at that time)? They took place on Midweek Sports Special (IIRC) and were clearly designed for ratings.

Apart from the one on Saint and Greavsie which Donald Trump assisted with.

Newport being in the northern half of the draw makes about as much sense as that Beijing news.

Isn't Newport south of Bristol? (Latitude wise)

Definitely south of Cheltenham and Burton.

Ah! So this is why the competition is sponsored by an energy drink. How many cans of Carabao will you need to be up for Newport County?

Perhaps they'll send some to the poor buggers in club media departments who'll have to get up so they can immediately update various platforms with the announcement "we've been drawn at home to Reading"

Sensible thing would be to tweet in advance where people can watch the draw and how the official response will be published at 9am.

Heh. I liked it most when they said it's not even being televised in China or anywhere else.

Not exactly gripping the South West either where only 4,000 home tickets have been sold for the visit to Whaddon Road of one-time World Cup winners West Ham.

I can't wait to watch us get dicked 5-0 in front of the Sky cameras. At least I'll get to see some West Ham reserves.

isn't it to do with newport requesting an away tie due to pitch resurfacing, as odd as it sounda

Newport have been stuck in the Northern half because they have requested an away draw due to the Welsh Rugby Union messing with their pitch, as had West Ham because of the athletics. So to avoid them being drawn against each other and both wanting to play away, Newport have switched. Could have just kicked them both out.

They have a pitch in Newport? Last time I went the playing surface resembled a cross between a third world DMZ and that bit in sand dunes where it starts to get grassy.

When the WRU took over the Dragons they invested nearly a million on the pitch. If Newport had gone down it would have been an artificial one.

So, the WRU investing (as AE points out) in a new pitch at a ground they own, which has been a rugby ground for 140 years and at which the football club are recent (and troublesome) tenants is "messing"? Righto.
