In more modern times, it would likely be a can of the sponsor's premium brew . . .

Spangles and I talked about it on the old board, but it is striking how much Fascist iconography survives on public buildings and the like. The "DUX" mosaics in the forecourt to the Olimpico are striking, but certainly not unique.

Hellas won again, beating Novara 2-1, while next week's opponents Manfredonia fell into the automatic relegation place.

With one game left, the bottom of the table is:

          Ternana 39
          Pro Patria 37
          Hellas Verona 31
          Lecco 31
          Paganese 29
          -----------
          Manfredonia 28

Hellas should therefore play Lecco in the two-legged play out, with the loser going down to C2.

At the top, Sassuolo won automatic promotion to Serie B when Cremonese and Padova drew in Cremona. The playoffs for the other promotion place will involve Cremonese, Cittadella, Foligno and either Foggia or Padova, with Foggia only needing a draw away to Ternana to assure their place.

In the other C1 group, Salernitana won automatic promotion to B, but the playoffs are far from set. Taranto and Ancona are in, but the last two places are up for grabs among Crotone, Lucchese, Arezzo, Perugia and Pescara.

Drat. Ah well, I can't really begrudge Sassuolo their title - if I may be allowed to return to my analogy from the previous page, they were holding the parcel when the music stopped for the last time. And 2008/9 will be the Verdeneri's first ever season in Serie B, IIRC.

Yup. Sassuolo will be new boys at this level.

Sassuolo is a completely unremarkable town outside of Modena whose only previous claim to fame is that it is the centre of the Italian ceramic tile industry.

Hellas Verona: Living on the Edge

Just to make things interesting, Hellas lost the last match of the regular season to Manfredonia, which means that they will play Pro Patria in the playout, while Lecco faces Paganese. First leg in Verona on Sunday 18th May, second leg at Busto Arsizio a week later.

Nearer the top of this group, Padova's 6-4 win over Cavese saw them fall one point short of the playoffs, which will begin with Cremonese facing Foggia and Cittadella playing Foligno.

The other group of C1 playoffs sees Ancona facing Pescara and Crotone playing Taranto; the ultimate winners of each group of four will join Sassuolo and Salernitana in Serie B next season.

Back in the mists of time I saw Cavese play an Anglo-Italian cup match at Cambridge City. We're talking around 1980 here.

Cavese have been around for 90 years, but are likely destined to always be remembered for a single result:

1982-83, Milan's first season ever in B and Cavese's second (out of a total of three, I think).

I had completely forgotten that Joe Jordan used to play for Milan, which of course now makes me understand why he pronounces it Meeeeeeeeelan

Hellas Verona: Living on the Edge

The first leg of the play-outs was yesterday, and Hellas left it as late as one possibly can, after dominating for almost the entire match (corner count 12-2).

With the last of five minutes of second half injury time already underway, Hellas won a free kick, which Zeytulaev floated to Morrante, who headed home as the Bentegodi "went mental" (TM Battylad).

Hellas Verona 1 Pro Patria 0.

Second leg next week at Busto Arsizio. To save their place in C1, Hellas need to do better than a 1 goal defeat, as the side with the better regular season record survives in the event the teams are tied on aggregate after the second leg (away goals do not count double).

In the other play-out, Lecco also recorded a 1-0 home victory over Paganese. In the first round of the playoffs, Cremonese drew 0-0 at Foggia, while Foligno recorded a 1-0 home win at Cittadella.

                            Or "not lose" then?

                            Or have I misunderstood you?

If they lose 1-0, they still win. Is that it?

There is no extra time in the playouts, nor do "away goals count double"; instead, ties where the sides are equal on aggregate are resolved in favour of the team with the higher regular season finish (in this case Pro Patria, which recorded 38 points to Hellas' 31).

                                So:
                                if Hellas win the second leg they stay up;
                                if Hellas draw the second leg they stay up;
if Hellas lose the second leg by more than one goal, they go down because the aggregate will be in Pro Patria's favour; and
if Hellas lose the second leg by one goal, they go down because of the rule noted above.

So, Hellas have to "not lose" then?

As the clock showed 90 minutes, Hellas were down 1-0 to Pro Patria, and on their way to C2 and likely oblivion.

And then Zeytulaev picked up a deflection off a throw in and put it in the back of the net.

Pro Patria 1 Hellas Verona 1

The gialloblu survive for another season in C1.
