How does a Test ground like Edgbaston still lose a day's play due to a wet outfield in 2017? No supermops, etc?

Surrey's declaration when 8 down is rather cheeky, but they can probably justify it in the context of the match and conditions yesterday evening.
The upshot at the moment though is it means Lancashire, three points behind them in third place, score only two of the three bowling points.
The Guardian notes that 'The gulf in prize money for second (£240,000) and third (£115,000) place was on show'.

Disappointingly Middlesex have recovered from 22/5 to 76/5. They must be a bit conflicted though - by getting bowled out incredibly cheaply they could have used that as evidence in their spurious claims about the pitch. Now they;ve got a few they can no longer do that.

Middlesex 127/8 at lunch, 109 behind Somerset.
Warwickshire are 79/5 against Hampshire.
Championship points in the ongoing relegation scrap so far:
County, previous + batting + bowling (* in progress)
Middlesex, 143 + 0* + 3
Hampshire, 140 + 0* + 1*
Somerset, 127 + 1 + 2*
In the other Division One matches, Surrey's declaration looks more justified as Lancashire are 84/5. And Yorkshire are 90/6, which is 137 behind Essex.Last edited by Kevin S; 26-09-2017, 12:06.

If Somerset win, they will have four to Middlesex's three and could get away with being level on points with them. Therefore Middlesex will be safe if they have a 17 point lead after the first innings are completed.

From the BBC OBO :
The pitch is still offering plenty of turn and bounce, and there is still the decision of the ECB's Wayne Noon to come on its acceptability, which we've been promised at close of play and could yet spoil Somerset's day.
Middlesex complained to the match's cricket liaison officer about the state of the Taunton pitch last night.
A further announcement is expected later today. Points may or may not be deducted. That's all I have at the moment I'm afraid!Last edited by Ray de Galles; 26-09-2017, 12:22.

Meanwhile in Division 2. Despite losing a day to rain, Northants still in the race to go up as they reduce Leicestershire to 26/7 (sigh) before a waggle at the end sees the Foxes reach an imposing 128 all out. Not sure what the permutations are for the final promotion spot, but the visitors certainly giving it a go, albeit against a horribly weak and woeful team.

Here's the ECB Pitch Document 2017 (PDF download).
Consensus on the radio commentary is that Taunton's bounce is not excessive or uneven and there won't be a points deduction.

Division Two
Worcestershire 293/7 v Durham
Sussex 508/7 v Notts (past 110 overs now)
Leicestershire 128 all out v Northants 30/0
Points
Worcs = 216 + 2* + 0*
Notts = 210 + 0* + 2
Northants = 197 + 0* + 3
So with the bowling points known for Notts and Northants, the latter are 12 points behind.
Theoretically Northants could still get 21 more points (giving 221) if they make 400+ runs in 110 overs and get the win. This means Worcestershire need four more points to seal promotion. They'll get one of those when they break 300 runs.Last edited by Kevin S; 26-09-2017, 13:50.

Worcestershire have now hit 300 and chalk up another batting point.
Sussex are doing Northants a mighty favour here. Why haven't they played like this all season? They could be going up themselves.
