Lamb, Sidebottom, Patel bowling for Warwickshire. Could be Tim Lamb, Arnie Sidebottom and Deepak Patel, if we imagine it's still 1981.

Tim Lamb can't be far off the poshest fast bowler of all time.

That was a lovely fluent stand by Chopra and my old school's Dan Lawrence, who's still going on 69. It really does look like Essex are gonna win the title for the first time in 25 years – it's been surprisingly uncomplicated.

Middlesex-Hampshire has closed for the day, so that's an inevitable draw giving five plus any batting/bowling points.

Another Championship point gained there. Come on Essex.

Ten Doeschate unluckily chops Sidebottom on to his stumps.

Oof, last three gone rather quickly. I'd take 300 now if it were offered.

I may have been hasty with that offer. Bopara and Foster making calm progress.

Oops. And Bopara goes straight away in this session...

He was unlucky. Ball hit thigh pad and was going over. Nice shape by Barker the bowler though.

Could be Champions with two to spare! Lancashire have had a poor first innings.

I know that the past month is the first time in 20 years that I've really paid attention but do the teams not play each other twice home and away? Only if they did some division 2 teams would have 6 games left to play.

Yes in Division One, no in Division Two: both divisions have a 14-match season. This is the first season of this format.

And batting to keep the Championship alive. Essex strike again: Warwickshire now 64/7.

Don't Lancashire need to win to keep the race alive? You'd think they need to score a touch faster to make that happen.

                                          Er, yes. Woo.

                                          *checks sums*

                                          • Two more matches means 48 points possible for Lancs.
                                          • So a 48 point lead would do it for Essex after these matches (as they would not be catchable on number of wins)
                                          • They started with a 36 point lead so need to gain 12 more points than Lancs to seal it.

Lancs have 3 bowling points, 0 batting points and would get 5 for a draw = 8
Essex have 3 bowling points, 4 batting points and would get 16 for the win = 23

                                            Lamb's gone now, too. 82/8.
