    Premier Class - GAA 2017

I know a few people who've been at it and said it's a great day out though in Donald Trump's America homeland security are probably there in force to pick up the illegals

I've been to Gaelic Park for local matches, which are generally fun, though I imagine the atmosphere ramps up for the real thing.

Only really black Irish would have anything to fear from 45's goons

Fairly predictable in Clones, Fermanagh were game for the first half, but Monaghan ultimately pulled away and won by nine.

Just another dull Munster hurling game - Cork shock the GAA world by comfortably beating Tipp by 2-27 to 1-26.

Terrific game, both sides went for it from the start, Conor Lehane had some game for Cork. If the rest of the season is as good as this we'll all be happy

              Ulster SFC: Derry v Tyrone

Derry were a quintessential team of the Nineties - winning their only All-Ireland in '93, and becoming League specialists, but have rather stagnated since 2000. Like Ferguson, Harte has constantly rejuvenated the Red Hand, and they should prevail here by 4-6 points.

              Munster SFC: Clare v Limerick

The Banner were one of the revelations of 2016, eliminating Roscommon, among others, en route to the last eight, and Gary Brennan deservedly secured an All-Star nomination. Limerick have regressed to the fifth-best Munster county, so a similar margin to the Ulster game seems likely.

              Cork v Waterford

In truth, the gulf here is such that the Cork ladies would probably be victorious in this fixture, with Waterford making little impression in the bottom division. The Rebels flirted with relegation to the third tier, an eight-point loss to Clare being a particular shock, but if they don't win by a dozen points, it may be time to ban the big ball from the county.

              Connacht SFC: London v Leitrim

The new facilities in Ruislip will be officially opened on Sunday, and the Exiles have a realistic prospect of success, against their fellow Division Four opponents. Still, they have failed to build on that memorable summer of 2013, and the Shannonsiders may escape with a three-point win.

Leinster SHC QFs: Galway v Dublin

The Tribesmen are on the verge of revolt, being still denied home provincial games or accommodation of underage sides in Leinster. The League final success shows real promise, and the Metropolitans have rather stagnated since their provincial success six years ago, so Galway by six for me.

                Laois v Wexford

It should have been Kerry, he wept bitterly, as the O'Moore County prevailed in two epic encounters against the Kingdom's finest. Joking aside, Eamon Kelly has done a terrific job with the county, and while they're likely to come up short on this occasion, the Tipp man is likely to show more grace in defeat than the increasingly distasteful Davy Fitz in victory.

                Westmeath v Offaly

Such is the Leinster round-robin that the Lake County progressed to the quarter-finals despite losing twice and winning once. Offaly only survived in 1B themselves thanks to a single victory over Kerry, but should have enough quality to win here.

The Rebels ultimately prevail by a point - hilarious for the neutral, but does highlight how far they've fallen in a mere seven years.

I've never seen a county go downhill as quickly as Cork have, they still have plenty of quality players but the passion seems to be missing, should be handy for Kerry in Munster

                        Leinster SFC: Dublin v Carlow

A notable reward for the Scallion Eaters for their victory over Wexford, as they face the two-time champions. Nothing will be learnt from tomorrow's tie, but 15 points would seem the likely margin.

                        Louth v Meath:

A repeat of the infamous 2010 Leinster final, and both sides will play Division Two final in 2018. The Royals have disappointed, in contrast with their historical reputation, but should edge this by two to three points.

                        Laois v Kildare:

Vastly contrasting fortunes, as the Midlanders were relegated to Division Four, while the Lilywhites comfortably secured promotion to Division One. Of course, championship form can overturn everything, but Kildare should be four to six points the better side.

                        Ulster SFC: Down v Armagh

Probably the most even football encounter, as mid-table Division Two meets the third-best Division Three side. Down famously failed to win a single game in 2016, but the Orchard County threw away promotion against Tipperary. A tough call, but Down may edge it by the minimum.

                        Munster SHC: Clare v Limerick

Easily the highest-profile game to be shown by a certain satellite broadcaster, but both have fallen from recent heights. Clare, in particular, need to prove 2013 was no fluke, and may have more quality than their Thomond rivals.

As the preliminary and quarter-final round near their end, no county has yet lost to a side from a lower division, and the championships seem increasingly two-tier, as the 18 remaining provincial sides testify:

Division 1: All 8 remain, though Cavan and Monaghan face off next Sunday.
Division 2: 6 (Derry and Fermanagh eliminated by D1 sides).
Division 3: 1 or 2 (Tipp get bye to semi, Offaly face Westmeath.
Division 4: 1 or 2 (Leitrim, Westmeath if they defeat Offaly).

                            Tipperary v Cork:

Speaks volumes that this tie is on RTE today, with the ascendant Premier set to be in the same division as the Rebels next year. Having won in Semple Stadium last year, Tipp will be confident of doing the double today, and I expect them to win by two.

                            Kerry v Clare:

With three counties in the last eight last season, an argument could be made for Munster being the most competitive province in football, and the Banner have always been doughty opponents. After the Brendan O'Sullivan fiasco, Kerry will want to get back to basics, and a six-point success is to be expected.

                            Westmeath v Offaly:

The last Leinster QF is easily the hardest to call. Offaly are technically in a higher League division, but Westmeath have reachsd the last two Leinster finals, and that experience should give them the edge here.

                            Monaghan v Cavan:

The first top-flight clash of the season, with the home side unlikely to miss out on the League final, while Cavan are improving, but inconsistent. Monaghan have won two Anglo-Celt cups in recent years, and should prevail.

                            Galway v Mayo:

The Tribesmen are reigning Connacht champions, but were subsequently overshadowed by their victims' eventual runner-up status. Having won the fixture last year, confidence will be high, but Mayo's hunger and desperation may give them a narrow win here.

                            Hurling - Kilkenny v Wexford:

The Cats have certainly lost at least eight of their nine lives, and face their strongest provincial challenges from both Galway and Sunday's opponents. Davy Fitz certainly worked the oracle in the Division 1B campaign, but by that very fact, avoided heavyweight opponents, and a trip to Nowlan Park may prove a bridge too far, despite spring success at that very venue.

                                    Leinster SF: Meath v Kildare

Sadly, far removed from the Nineties highs of Ollie Murphy v Tadgh Fennin, but should still prove a heated encounter. The Lilywhites seem the more consistent side, securing consecutive promotions, and should edge this by 3-4 points.

                                    Connacht SF: Leitrim v Roscommon

A side that reached this stage by defeating London, versus a team who haven't played since the League concluded. Still, playing Kerry, Tyrone, Mayo etc seems infinitely preferable preparation than facing Carlow and Antrim, so the Rossies should prevail.

                                    Ulster SF: Tyrone v Donegal

Easily the football game of the week, and arguably the season to date. Rory Gallagher has done a remarkable job with his youthful squad, while Mickey Harte's rebuilding is about two years further advanced. Toss of a coin, but Donegal could well get revenge for last year's Final defeat.

Leinster QF Replay: Westmeath v Offaly

Generally, underdogs in the GAA receive only one chance to cause a shock, and with home advantage moving to Mullingar, the Lake County should make no mistake on this occasion.

                                    Munster SHC: Cork v Waterford

Gloom has returned to Leeside, after the Páirc Uí Chaoimh cock-up saw the Munster final revert to Fitzgerald Stadium, but Corkonians only get properly exercised by a clash of the ash. Most of the Waterford old guard have retired, and it remains to be seen if they can be ready for Cork's tyros.

                                      All-Ireland Qualifiers: Round 1A

                                      Waterford v Derry:

After being initially drawn away, Waterford were due a home qualifier. Nevertheless, it would be a huge shock if the Oakleafers were defeated, despite recent travails.

                                      Louth v Longford:

In an ordinary provincial tie, the Wee County would be fancied, given their elevation to the second tier, and home advantage. However, Longford have an excellent qualifier record (beating Derry and Monaghan in recent years), so a shock might almost be expected.

                                      Wicklow v Laois:

Neither county has pulled up any trees this year, and Aughrim is a notorious fortress. Still, it would mark a new nadir for the O'Moore County for their season to end before Midsummer.

                                      Sligo v Antrim:

The Yeats County were competitive against Mayo, while Antrim were hammered by Donegal - should be a comfortable home win.

A rather quiet weekend, as the provincial championships move towards finals, and only one hurling encounter.

Leinster SFC SF: Dublin v Westmeath

A repeat of the last two Leinster finals, where the Lake County capitalised on the rather weaker side of draws. Last year, they played a rather defensive game, but ultimately Dublin still prevailed by double digits, and a similar outcome must be expected on Sunday.

Ulster SFC SF: Monaghan v Down

The spectre of Tyrone's demolition of Donegal looms over both contestants tomorrow, underlining the challenge faced by the victor. Monaghan rather stumbled past Cavan en route, but should still possess too much big-game experience for the Mournemen.

                                          All-Ireland Qualifiers:

                                          Armagh v Fermanagh:

Neither have been impressive in recent years, but home advantage and a deeper panel favours the Orchard County.

                                          Limerick v Wexford:

The wheels have rather come off the Model County's season after an impressive spring promotion, but overall they should clear this hurdle.

                                          Offaly v Cavan:

The home side have an atrocious qualifier record, and the Breffni County's talented youths are tipped to prevail here.

                                          London v Carlow:

Another airing for the new Ruislip venue and an upset is possible, but Carlow's recent momentum should see them into round two.

                                          Hurling: Laois v Carlow

The first hurling qualifier sees the Midlanders, whose defeat to Wexfird looks better in retrospect, face the winners of the second-tier Christy Ring Cup in a unique encounter, if the proposals for three hurling groups are approved by a Special Congress. On the pitch, the Barrowsiders will be game, but Laois should win fairly comfortably.

Even Armagh, who they got, would seem a step too far, and talk of a two-tier championship is never far away. Really impressed by Down's progress this year, after a duck egg in 2016, would still be a huge shock if they remotely threatened Tyrone, however.

                                              Round 2B Qualifier Draw:

Munster Football Final: Kerry v Cork

After the debacle on Leeside, Fitzgerald Stadium hosts its third successive Munster final. Dublin may have reduced the significance of the annual clash, but both sides will be as competitive as ever, and it will be a surprise if Kerry win by more than four.

                                                  All-Ireland Qualifiers, Round 2A:

                                                  Mayo v Derry:

Far from a walkover, but the Westerners should still be 5-8 points the better team.

                                                  Laois v Clare:

After a fruitful twelve months, the Munster side can consider themselves favourites, and should have the edge here.

                                                  Meath v Sligo:

Hard to get a read on The Royals, impressive against Louth, but horrific versus Kildare. That said, Sligo have shown no form in recent years, and would need a magnificent improvement to cause an upset.

                                                  Donegal v Longford:

The Midlanders have an impressive qualifier record, but the Ulstermen will wish to make amends for their limp display against Tyrone, and should win handily.

Leinster Hurling Final: Wexford v Galway

A provincial set-piece I rarely get to see because of the pairing, Sunday's decider should prove intriguing through sheer novelty alone. Davy Fitz has transformed the Model County's self-confidence, but the Tribesmen are consistent performers, and would appear 8-10 points the superior outfit.

                                                    All-Ireland Qualifiers

                                                    Westmeath v Tipperary:

Would seem a routine fixture for the defending champions, so the scoreboard may take a pummelling.

                                                    Dublin v Laois:

A rare inter-county fixture for Parnell Park in recent years, Laois may be improving, but Dublin will expect a four-to-six point victory by the finish.

                                                    Offaly v Waterford:

A long transition period continues for the Faithful, as their trimming by Galway attests. Waterford were shocked by Cork's youthful vigour, and may elect to take out their frustration with a punishing final margin.

                                                    Limerick v Kilkenny:

Match of the day, as the Shannonsiders follow up their Banner ding-dong against fifteen scalded Cats. Unfortunately, the game takes place in Nowlan Park, so Kilkenny are favoured by 6-8 points.
