    Premier Class - GAA 2017

The National Football League resumes next Sunday, with Dublin short odds for a fifth successive title:

    Division One:

    Cavan
    Donegal
    Dublin
    Kerry
    Mayo
    Monaghan
    Roscommon
    Tyrone

I predict a Dublin v Tyrone final, with Roscommon and Cavan relegated.

    Division Two:

    Clare
    Cork
    Derry
    Down
    Fermanagh
    Galway
    Kildare
    Meath

Cork and Galway should be promoted, with Clare and Fermanagh dropping to the third tier.

    Division Three:

    Antrim
    Armagh
    Laois
    Longford
    Louth
    Offaly
    Sligo
    Tipperary

Armagh and Tipp look the class outfits here, with Antrim and Longford falling to the bottom division.

    Division Four:

    Carlow
    Leitrim
    Limerick
    London
    Waterford
    Westmeath
    Wexford
    Wicklow

Not much quality here, but Westmeath and Wexford start as promotion favourites, with London collecting the wooden spoon.

I note from your table, that tipp's run to the semi final last year involved them beating three divison two teams, and losing to the two division one teams they faced. They could be a lot better this year and not get as far depending on the luck of the draw.

I can see meath dropping back into the third tier, they're a big county in name only and from what I've heard morale is on the floor, playing Joe Sheridan in goal says it all to be honest

I was talking to two lads who were up in cavan last week, official attendance was around 17,000 and they both said there was well over 20,000 there, kids were let in for free so with a rare chance to see the all Ireland champions in cavan whole schools probably turned up, also the dubs are getting fed up with jibes about not travelling away so they turned up in large numbers too

Promising start for Kerry - starting to blend in some of the successful minor teams of recent seasons, with Tom O'Sullivan, Jack Savage and Jack Barry all impressing, so should see a bumper crowd in Tralee tomorrow night.

In good news for the other 31 counties shauchtneil of derry beat st vincents of Dublin in the all Ireland club football semi final, in bad news for the other 31 it means that Dermot Connolly is available for the dubs for the rest of the league, meanwhile dr crokes of kerry won the other semi final so Colm Cooper might finally win the only medal to elude him

The Dubs have always traveled in big numbers. I was at many Championship games in Navan in the 90's where the Dublin support was massive. And even in the January O'Byrne Cup games there's always a decent crowd brought to places like Carlow, Mullingar & Aughrim.

I think the "Dublin never have to travel away in the Championship" argument has mutated into a "Dublin fans don't travel away in large numbers" argument over the years.

Just found out that the Dublin hurlers hammered Cork last night, bloody hell, had us down for a zero points relegation this year, maybe Cunningham is doing something right after all

No fewer than 56 motions on the 2017 Clár, with the controversial Motion No. 4, seeking to convert the quarter-finals into round-robin groups, up for ratification.

Significant changes to the 2018 Football Championship - two seem to be common sense, namely moving the All-Ireland Finals to August and scrapping replays except for provincial and All-Ireland Finals. Sadly, the Super 8 proposal was passed - will fill the pockets of the elite counties, but can't see the benefits for the likes of Leitrim and Waterford.

Absolute cracker between Tipp and Kilkenny on Eir: 2-9 to 2-6 to the Premier as HT approaches. Next week, a low-key tie in Tralee, as Kerry aim to end Dublin's two-year unbeaten record.

As the League enters the final round, here's how the tables look:

                                Division One

                                1. Dublin 3 3 0 +40 9
                                2. Donegal 3 2 1 +12 8
                                3. Tyrone 3 2 1 +6 8
                                4. Monaghan 3 1 2 +10 7
                                5. Kerry 2 2 2 +6 6

                                7. Cavan 1 2 3 -20 4
                                8. Roscommon (R) 0 0 6 -49 0

Even Kerry could make the Divisional final, if they, Dublin and Mayo all win on Sunday.

                                Division Two:

                                1. Kildare (P) 5 0 1 +33 10
                                2. Galway 4 1 1 +30 9
                                3. Meath 3 1 2 +32 7
                                4. Cork 2 2 2 -2 6
                                5. Clare 2 1 3 0 5
                                6. Fermanagh 2 0 4 -30 4
                                7. Down 2 0 4 -18 4 (H2H with Fermanagh)
                                8. Derry 1 1 4 -35 3

                                Division Three:

                                1. Louth (P) 5 0 1 +11 10
                                2. Armagh 4 1 1 +46 9
                                3. Tipperary 4 0 2 +18 8
                                4. Sligo 2 1 3 -5 5
                                5. Longford 2 0 4 -6 4
                                6. Laois 2 0 4 -19 4
                                7. Antrim 2 0 4 -19 4 (Fewer points scored)
                                8. Offaly 2 0 4 -27 4

                                Division Four:

                                1. Westmeath (P) 5 1 0 +55 11
                                2. Wexford (P) 5 0 1 -6 10
                                3. Carlow 3 1 2 +15 7
                                4. Limerick 3 0 3 -3 6
                                5. Leitrim 3 0 3 +3 6 (H2H)
                                6. Waterford 2 0 4 -6 4
                                7. Wicklow 1 0 5 -29 2
                                8. London 1 0 5 -30 2

Wexford's bizarre points difference is explained by their last game - having being promoted, they played a B team against Westmeath and lost by 24 points.

Dramatic finish in Division One - Kerry beat Tyrone by 7, Dublin come from behind to beat Monaghan, and Mayo beat Donegal by 2. Dublin qualify for the League final, and having been 6th this morning, Kerry join them in the decider, after leapfrogging three rivals on points difference!

YEESS! It may have been only a League final, but an important psychological monkey for Kerry to get off their backs, and such was their second-half dominance that a draw truly would have been a travesty. Of course, a September re-match will prove a different animal entirely, but the Kerry youngsters are showing that they can match skill with steel when required.

No problem with the result, Kerry deserved it, Dublin were uncharacteristically sloppy with their passing though you might say that was Kerry hassling them into mistakes, I won't argue, it goes to show that you have to come out and take on the dubs, our backline can get creaky without jonny cooper (probably our most underrated player ) playing

Whatever other political and social consequences may occur, the GAA certainly can't be faulted when it comes to integration - this year's Kerry minor goalie is Deividas Uosis, while Stefan Okunbor was on last year's three-in-a-row minor winners.

After Galway dismantling Tipperary in this year's league final I think the hurling championship could be the most open one for years, apart from the above mentioned twosome, Waterford, Kilkenny, Clare, Wexford and Limerick will all feel they could be around at the business end of things, not to mention Cork and to a lesser extent Dublin can up their game and cause an upset, certainly worth waiting for

With the Championship cranking into gear this weekend, time for my weekly fixture preview:

                                                Monaghan v Fermanagh:

Ignoring New York v Sligo, Saturday's fixture is the real start of the Football Championship, and while the Farney County won't lift Sam, they are real contenders for provincial honours. A promising Division One campaign saw them win in Killarney, and lead Dublin by six points in the final round before ultimately running out of steam. Fermanagh had an indifferent Division Two campaign, being tamely relegated, and Monaghan should have six points to spare here.

                                                Donegal v Antrim:

Another seeming mismatch here, with one of the weaker Ulster counties against one of the "Big Six", albeit a side in transition after multiple retirements. Still, they are a formidable side in Ballybofey, and again should win by eight.

                                                Laois v Longford:

My tip for the shock of the weekend, as the home side are favoured to Division Four for the first time in 50 years. Longford's form is variable, to put it mildly, but they always battle to the finish, and I think they will prevail by the minimum here.

                                                Louth v Wicklow:

The Wee County have impressed this spring, defeating both Tipperary and Armagh in escaping the third division, so should defeat their rivals by a double-digit margin.

                                                Carlow v Wexford:

Nothing either this year or in previous summers suggests the Barrowsiders will present any challenge here, while the Yellowbellies were the first county to secure promotion this spring, so will have six points minimum to spare.

                                                Mayo v Sligo:

It's now or never for the Westerners, if their rapidly-aging squad is ever to lift "the canister", as Páidí O'Sé referred to the most-coveted trophy in Irish sport. The Yeats County has the advantage of an early outing in Gaelic Park, but it's still highly unlikely that they will be able to compete with Stephen Rochford's outfit.

                                                Hurling - Tipp v Cork:

Fortunes in the Rebel County have reached such a low ebb this decade that even Kerry fans are almost hoping for a modest revival. The hurlers were roundly dispatched by Limerick in the league quarter-final, and while the final perhaps highlights the folly of relying on the second competition as a form guide, the champions would appear to be five to six points the superior outfit, and are unlikely to be overly troubled on Sunday.
