    Tam Dalyell has died.

    I have mixed feelings about him. It seemed through the 80s that the Belgrano was the only subject he ever spoke about, and it's not clear that he was right on that claim.

    But 42 years of Parliamentary service, making sure his constituents had a national voice, the canary in the coal-mine, the conscience of an age that appeared to have none: all fine qualities.

      He seemed a decent and principled chap. A remnant of an extinct Labour era.

        He was a wee bit... eccentric on a whole load of issues. But dogged and principled, even when wrong (or hopefully right in the end, when it comes to the ultimate consequence of the Devolution settlement he stood implacably against).
