These are amazing Clive, thanks for posting the links. I've heard recordings of Alessandro Moreschi before, but the rest of those early recordings are all new to me.

All of Public Service Broadcasting's output.

There is a great speech at the end of The Godfathers' equally great version of "Sunarise" which I always thought was Desmond Tutu but, having googled the quote, doesn't appear to be but I don't know who it was.

Lovely bits of Bakelite in that 1939 vid, Clive. I admit I have a bit of a thing for Bakelite.

Billy Paul's Phillysoultastic cover of Wing's Let 'Em In makes the best use of MLK and Malcolm X speeches in recorded music.

Bill Wither's spoken word anecdote of meeting a Vietnam War veteran at the start of I Can't Write Left Handed is very moving.

This far in an no mention of "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)"? Pshaw.

Also, the end of Yello's "The Race", Billy McKloski reporting for NBC Sports of America. Always wondered if that was a sample or just spoken by someone in the band, because I can't find anything pertaining to the guy.

Ooh, that reminds me: Paradise By The Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf, off Bat Out Of Hell, features a baseball-style commentary interlude by New York Yankees announcer Phil Rizzuto serving as metaphor for the protagonist's attempt to, erm, get around the bases tonight with the object of his desire.

Apparently there's some debate over whether Rizzuto knew quite what he was getting himself into:
Rizzuto's baseball play-by-play call was recorded in 1976 at The Hit Factory in New York City by producer Todd Rundgren, Meat Loaf and Steinman. Rizzuto publicly maintained he was unaware that his contribution would be equated with sex in the finished song, but Meat Loaf asserts that Rizzuto only feigned ignorance to stifle some criticism from a priest and was fully aware of the context of what he was recording.

Of the same album. Intro to You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth

                                  On a hot summer night,
would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
[Girl:] Will he offer me his mouth?

[Girl:] Will he offer me his teeth?
                                  [Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Will he offer me his jaws?
                                  [Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Will he offer me his hunger?
                                  [Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Again, will he offer me his hunger?
                                  [Boy:] Yes!
[Girl:]And will he starve without me?
                                  [Boy:] Yes!
[Girl:] And does he love me?
                                  [Boy:] Yes.
                                  [Girl:] Yes.

And Wasted Youth from Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell is an entirely (ludicrous) spoken monologue from Jim Steinman – a remixed version of the more descriptively-titled Love And Death And An American Guitar from the latter's solo Bad For Good album.

Perhaps the ultimate 'death' single, certainly one of the gloomiest, is spoken/sung by ex-Ronette Estelle Bennett (with a little help from Adolf among others.)

The second volume of Van Morrison's 'Best of' albums (which I actually prefer to the more famous 1990 first one with the hits on it) has 'Coney Island', in which all lyrics are spoken, and 'Rave On John Donne' [Live At The Grand Opera House Belfast 1983], with a long spoken verse.
