No progress on NI border, says NI committee
Government has repeatedly underlined that the free movement of people across the border will not be affected, and that no physical infrastructure will be put in place. However, the Committee was unable to identify any border solution currently in operation across the globe that would enable physical infrastructure to be avoided when rules and tariffs diverge.

Draft withdrawal treaty "agreed". Though if you go through the markup, there's an awful lot on which the official comment is "text proposed by the Union on which discussions are ongoing as no agreement has yet been found" including the ECJ, dispute settlement, and most of the Northern Ireland issues. The UK seems to have caved on citizens' rights, the length of the transition, and of course the money.
Here's what has been agreed on NI:
Consistent with the arrangements set out in Articles 4 to 7 of this Protocol, and in full respect of
Union law, this Protocol shall be implemented and applied so as to maintain the necessary
conditions for continued North-South cooperation, including in the areas of environment, health,
agriculture, transport, education and tourism, as well as energy, telecommunications,
broadcasting, inland fisheries, justice and security, higher education and sport. In full respect of
Union law, the United Kingdom and Ireland may continue to make new arrangements building on
the provisions of the 1998 Agreement in other areas of North-South cooperation on the island of
Ireland.
2. The Joint Committee shall keep under constant review the extent to which the implementation
and application of this Protocol maintains the necessary conditions for North-South cooperation.
The Joint Committee may, including on recommendation from the Specialised Committee, make
appropriate recommendations to the Union and the United Kingdom in this respect
...
Should a subsequent agreement between the Union and the United Kingdom which addresses the
unique circumstances on the island of Ireland, avoids a hard border and protects the 1998
Agreement in all its dimensions, become applicable after the entry into force of the Withdrawal
Agreement, this Protocol shall not apply or shall cease to apply, as the case may be, in whole or in
part, from the date of application of such subsequent agreement and in accordance with that
agreement.

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson says the EU transition deal on fishing is "an undoubted disappointment" and says when it comes to the final deal she will "not support a deal as we leave the EU which fails to deliver full control over fish stocks and vessel access".
Maybe she'll learn not to listen to Gove.

I mean, on the plus side, the pattern of the government putting up a brave/idiotic front for a while and then giving in to everything the EU wants is holding up remarkably well. So I'm a little more confident we're not going to have a chaotic exit. It's not going to be a Brexit that satisfies anyone, though, at this rate. Except maybe Germany.

David Allen Green's take is a bit odd. Of course the transition period is Brexit in name only. Otherwise it would be much good as a transition.

What exactly do The People of The Fish want? They were busily fishing the North Sea to extinction before 1973. Even Gove has admitted that there would be no free for all post CFP and that a quota system would have to continue. It is great watching Ruth Davidson squirm and talk shite but. Hope all the wanks in NE Scotland who went Tory are dead chuffed now. Mibees kicking out Robertson for an incompetent Rangers Underpants wearing linesman wasn’t the best of moves. Fuckin chuckleheads.Last edited by Lang Spoon; 20-03-2018, 16:58.

EU 27 agree on offering only an equivalence regime for financial services. The existing equivalence framework will be revised, but no detail on how. It's not specified which sectors will be covered — it's very piecemeal at the moment, and even for the sectors that are covered, equivalence only covers certain aspects of regulation. And it seems it will still be revocable at short notice.

Bloomberg quotes the key passage:Regarding financial services, the aim should be reviewed and improved equivalence mechanisms, allowing appropriate access to financial services markets, while preserving financial stability, the integrity of the single market and the autonomy of decision making in the European Union. Equivalence mechanisms and decisions remain defined and implemented on a unilateral basis by the European Union.

Freedom.
@thomasbrake
It's been confirmed that, subject to a transitional deal, Roaming Regs will stop applying to the UK after #Brexit. As a consequence, UK providers will no longer be subject to the obligation not to charge for the use in the EU of roaming services. Roaming charges could be back!

Good point made here- not that the UK will do unilateral tariff abolition, but a few Hannans are still dining out on it.

Interesting point to come out of this session which I hadn't previously considered is that if post-Brexit UK offered full unilateral tariff free access to all developing countries, that could hit LDCs who would become relatively less competitive vis-a-vis middle income countries

First non SLab to win Glasgow East End since the 20s. Lost the WM seat in 2010 so they parked him in Holyrood. Where he occasionally says politically stupid (if true) things about Irish Republicanism (lets just say his sympathies aren’t with the Jaffa Gammons).
