Or EU de facto gives in, and all their companies divest themselves of investment in Iran.

Yeah, but mostly I've been joking eg about white rightwing evangelicals imminently fleeing Trump in shock at paying off Stormy Daniels.

James Comey was up here talking to the CBC on Friday. He doubts much will change until the 2020 election. Which, he implied, will likely be the most important any American will ever vote in. It will, he says, have to be about the importance of truth in public life. Truth, as he pointed out, is the fourth word of the Declaration of Independence and presently there's a president who lies reflexively with no fear of consequence. If that doesn't change then the US is totally fucked. (He did actually say the last bit, but you know what I mean.)

Not sure this is how a team of rivals is supposed to work

"The most common substantive leaks are the result of someone losing an internal policy debate," a current senior administration official told me. "By leaking the decision, the loser gets one last chance to kill it with blowback from the public, Congress or even the President."
"Otherwise," the official added, "you have to realize that working here is kind of like being in a never-ending 'Mexican Standoff.' Everyone has guns (leaks) pointed at each other and it's only a matter of time before someone shoots. There's rarely a peaceful conclusion so you might as well shoot first."

Also, from that Cohen law school article, WTF:

Several tweets connect Cohen and the school to embarrassing headlines about another Cooley alum—Pennsylvania state judge Elizabeth Beckley, who graduated a year after Cohen. Recent news reports revealed that Beckley, asked to preside over a marriage late last year, instead called in federal immigration agents because she suspected the Guatemala-born groom was in the United States illegally. The 22-year-old groom, who had in fact been a legal resident of the U.S. since his adoption by an American couple when he was eight months old, was fingerprinted and faced with arrest by immigration agents on what was supposed to be his wedding day.

Why didn't Comey attend a hearing with that Senate Committee?

He testified in front of them for almost three hours.

I thought he must have done, but the article said.

The senators met with former NSA director Mike Rogers, former CIA director John Brennan, and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper earlier on Wednesday, The Hill reported.

The committee had also invited former FBI director James Comey to attend, though he ultimately declined.

So, I think there's something interesting going on in the California jungle primary. Gavin Newsom, who is almost certain to be one of the two candidates for governor, is advertising hard. But his adverts are 50% Newsom, 50% John Cox. John Cox is a fairly right-wing conservative Republican.

Newsom's adverts are all "Unlike John Cox, who wants to build a wall..." and "Unlike John Cox, who wants to end sanctuary cities", and so on.

I have a feeling that Newsom is deliberately trying to drive Republican voters all to Cox, to give him enough votes to come second in the Jungle Primary. Newsom would be far happier, and have a far easier time, with Cox as an opponent than with, say, Vallaraigosa or any of the other Democrats in the race.

I think trump may just have said the most stupid thing I've heard a politician say. it's clear that Bolton has told trump about how they got rid of gadaffi by getting him to give up his nuclear weapons, and then overthrowing him a little while later. So the first step to getting rid of Kim is to convince him to give up his nuclear weapons. So trump, having failed to understand the plan is telling Kim to give up his weapons or end up like gadaffi, seemingly unaware that not wanting to end up like gadaffi is precisely the reason he actually went through with developing nuclear missiles in the first place. He's so utterly and cretinously stupid.

Bolton has been very clear from the outset that he thinks the Libyan model for getting rid of nuclear program is what he wants Kim to follow.

The reason he's doing this is because Bolton doesn't want any summits or negotiation to happen at all and thinks the US should just bomb NK now. If Bolton keeps saying "come to a summit and you'll end up in a gutter like Gadaffi" he's hoping that Kim will decide to not negotiate.

Libya. There's a fine model on how to handle a denuclearised country towards democracy.

Trump said in his campaign that he had opposed the Libya action (despite video proof of him supporting it). Double flip.

But promising "total decimation" is scary.

The Trump administration is expected to announce that organisations that offer or mention abortion to their patients will lose federal funding.

One such organisation, Planned Parenthood, said the proposal was "dangerous" and "outrageous" and would "have devastating consequences".
