It seems just insanely open to - even designed for - abuse.
In many cases it is, but that has been the case in various places for the entire history of the country.

It's why the Voting Rights Act was such a monumental piece of legislation and why the Supreme Court's evisceration of some of its key provisions was so pernicious. It's also one of the (many) reasons our turnout numbers are so low, as it convinces people that the system is rigged and that their vote doesn't matter.

As always, it is incredibly hard to get legislators who owe their seats to the the current system and/or see reform as an existential threat to their preferred policies to agree to changes.

The governor is pretending Medicaid expansion (voted for 59-41 in a ballot initiative) is unaffordable.

Some good news from Maryland. Passed automatic voter registration. Republican Governor didn't veto.

Special election? Edit- seen that the Greg Abbot can decide whether he wants to hold one or not. But he might think it'll look bad if he doesn't hold one because the district was fucked by the hurricane.

                This guy sounds great.

A South Carolina Republican congressman is not backing down from critics after he pulled out his own personal — and loaded — .38-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun during a meeting with constituents Friday.

Norman told The Post and Courier he pulled the weapon in attempt to make a point that guns are only dangerous in the hands of criminals. He was speaking to constituents about gun violence during a public meeting in Rock Hill.

“I’m not going to be a Gabby Giffords,” U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman said afterward, referring to a former Arizona congresswoman who was shot outside a Tucson-area grocery store in 2011. “I don’t mind dying, but whoever shoots me better shoot well or I’m shooting back.”
Gabby Giffords was doing a street corner public meeting. Was she supposed to be holding a loaded gun in case she was shot?

Assad has just called 45's bluff. Presumably he will have to do more than a symbolic "no civilian casualties" bombing of an airbase this time?

Trump: "If President Obama had crossed his stated Red Line In the Sand, the Syrian disaster would have ended long ago! Animal Assad would have been history!"

So he's laid down regime change as the desired goal and will look foolish is he falls short of that.

If foolishness was a bar that mattered to his base, he exceeded it the week he took office. It's surely clear by now it doesn't matter what he says. It's the mere fact that he's saying it that counts for them.

                              https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/09/u...ael-cohen.html

The F.B.I. on Monday raided the office of President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, seizing records related to several topics including payments to a pornographic-film actress.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained the search warrant after receiving a referral from the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, according to Mr. Cohen’s lawyer, who called the search “completely inappropriate and unnecessary.” The search does not appear to be directly related to Mr. Mueller’s investigation, but likely resulted from information he had uncovered and gave to prosecutors in New York.

                                  This is very good.

This is a big deal. It's very early on, but here's some things we can already tell.

                                  1. According to Cohen's own lawyer, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York (widely regarded within itself as being the most important and prestigious U.S. Attorney's Office in the country) secured the search warrants for the FBI. Assuming this report is correct, that means that a very mainstream U.S. Attorney's Office — not just Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office — thought that there was enough for a search warrant here.

                                  2. Moreover, it's not just that the office thought that there was enough for a search warrant. They thought there was enough for a search warrant of an attorney's office for that attorney's client communications. That's a very fraught and extraordinary move that requires multiple levels of authorization within the Department of Justice. The U.S. Attorney's Manual — at Section 9-13.320 — contains the relevant policies and procedures.

And also, 45 can't pardon in a state crime.

That’s both true and important, but this an entirely Federal operation as far as we know so far.

Sorry. I mistakenly thought it was New York's attorney's office, rather than the Feeb.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s company appealed directly to Panama’s president to intervene in its fight over control of a luxury hotel, even invoking a treaty between the two countries, in what ethics experts say was a blatant mingling of Trump’s business and government interests.

That appeal in a letter last month from lawyers for the Trump Organization to Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela was apparently unsuccessful — an emergency arbitrator days later declined to reinstate the Trump management team to the waterfront hotel in Panama City. But it provides hard proof of exactly the kind of conflict experts feared when Trump refused to divest from a sprawling empire that includes hotels, golf courses, licensing deals and other interests in more than 20 countries.
