Fuckin hell, that could almost be Trieste from the photo. Squinting. Everywhere can look Continental with proper Urban Rail. And in black and white.

Lesko wins in Arizona but not by as much as you'd expect in normal circumstances. Both parties can boast of a good result.

I don't know if we dealt with this at the time, but an American Boxer called Rod Salka decided to wear an America 1st wall patterned pair of shorts in a recent super featherweight bout against a mexican opponent. Unfortunately for Salka, the mexican he was fighting was the recently dethroned world Champion Francisco Vargas, who was getting ready for a tilt at reclaiming his crown, and he proceeded to savagely beat him into a bloody pulp over six rounds.

I think it's a very good result for the Democrats, way better than the generic poll suggests. Arizona I'd expect to be more easy to motivate Republicans to vote than other places, with border security as Trump's thing.

Democrats gained an NY State senate seat as well.

Could a mod maybe shift some of this thread over to the rail thread? Maybe from Bryan's mouth watering map of old Cork lines?

It's going to be remarkable to behold when they manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again, isn't it?

You guys don't do by elections properly. Then again nor do we any more. We used to have stuff like the Tories losing Christchurch by 16,000.

Any chance that charmer in Montana could be in trouble in November? He'd already got lots of postal votes in when he beat up the reporter, and bullshitted about it. There's a senate race too, which I expect the Democrats to hold on.

There's definitely some truth to this - It's mostly old people, Arpaio racists and libertarian nutters in that part of Arizona, which are groups which never swing their vote. It should have been almost as unlikely to move as Alabama, and Lesko wasn't a Roy Moore type of unelectable candidate. Add in that the RNC had to blow a bunch of cash on this to shore Lesko up. This is the kind of result that should have Republicans terrified, because if this part of Arizona can swing this far, then god knows what suburban Dallas or Philadelphia or Columbus are going to do.

Indeed. Virginia suburbs were awful for them last year- though maybe there's a demographic shift going on there too.

Trump's Veterans Association pick has a few problems.

Ronny Jackson, Trump's nominee to head the VA, sounds like a regular Dr. Feelgood:

Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, the White House physician nominated to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, provided “a large supply” of Percocet, a prescription opioid, to a White House military office staff member, throwing his own medical staff “into a panic” when the medical unit could not account for the missing drugs, according to a summary of questionable deeds compiled by the Democratic staff of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

A nurse on his staff said Dr. Jackson had written himself prescriptions, and when caught, he asked a physician assistant to provide the medication. And at a Secret Service going away party, the doctor got intoxicated and “wrecked a government vehicle,” according to the summary.
                            Percocet, molly, Percocet...

Emmanuel Macron played Trump beautifully. I let Trump have all the flattery, pomp, ceremony and awkward touching, and then made as speech in Congress that ripped Trump a new one on the Paris Agreement and tariffs -- to loud applause and standing ovations. And he made it known that he thinks Trump is just a temporary nuisance.

Doug Jones will support Mike Pompeo for Sec of State.

It what he has to do to retain his seat, apparently. Voters really dig Mike Pompeo, and will not have forgotten it in 2 and a half years time. Sensible politics bullshit.

Jackson has withdrawn his name from consideration as Secretary of the Veterans Administration.

He will stay on as head of the White House Medical Unit.

I'm quite certain that Obama has been on the horn to his former personnel guys to try to understand just how they allowed this turkey to serve as his personal physician for eight years.

It's a very questionable approach, obviously, but if he's going to do that, he can't really start doing it a year before the election. For some reason, voting for Trump nominees seems to be a popular way for Red State Dems to show they've "reached across the aisle". I suppose it's because Trump personally is popular in their states, more so than the Republican Party.

It seems to make little sense here because Pompeo's especially bad and might not have won the vote. With others like Gorsuch, who were going to pass anyway, it makes more sense maybe.

Magnificent. The President of The United States dials into your call-in show and you're trying to figure out "how do I wrap this up elegantly and get rid of him".

The issue isn't that Doug Jones feels triangulated to be a republican endorsing bell-end, but that he is one. As long as Democrats view those states as having electorates only interested in a choice between mad-racist small-state fucktards and small-state fucktards, then they'll keep choosing them, and they'll kjeep getting elected.

But, at the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, the sensibles who brought this wisdom to the Democratic Party (as they did to the Labour Party) are on a spectularly long losing streak so hopefully, this strategy will cease to be plays 1-999 in the playbook.
