Every day is a Peter Sagan day: Pro Cycling 2017

    Tour of California route announced:

Unfortunately for San Bernardinault, no San Diego this year.

Still a lot of travel distances between the stages, and there's an interesting downhill stage to finish on the final day, from the San Gabriels down to Pasadena.

Calling Modesto to San Jose a "mountain stage" is a bit of a stretch

I wouldn't be so sure. Some of those coast range hills are utterly evil. You wouldn't think that between Napa and Sonoma was "mountain", but I rode one of those hills last month and it was one of the hardest bits of cycling I've ever done. Only 2000 feet, but at an average 12%, with sections at 16 or 17%.

Yes, they can be steep, but they aren't really mountains

Here's Sky's new jersey. They've changed manufacturer, out go Rapha, in come Castelli.

The jersey apparently takes inspiration from the classic Breton shirt (which sounds more a Rapha thing) but has been, and I quote "reimagined in a data pattern with each stripe on the jersey, short, mitts, socks and cap representing a specific Team Sky victory"

Perhaps they could add additional stripes for other memorable moments such as "team falls apart after Contador attacks at the Vuelta", "Froome falls off repeatedly then goes home from the Tour", "man takes jiffy bag on a flight to Switzerland".

Ha, very good. Yeah, that blurb annoyed me too. You just know there is already a set in storage with five long yellow stripes ready for the end of July.

But the wankery aside, it does look rather nice.

Some more new kits this week. Presumably they'll be in a rubbish format because of the board, but you can guess what they're meant to look like.

                Astana

Dimension Data, which looks like Orica reversed

Nice to see black shorts making a general comeback.

That is most welcome, not least given the rule that riders in a leader's jersey must wear either shorts that match the colour of the jersey (which looks overdone) or the standard team shorts, which can also look shite.

Black team shorts solves that immediately.

ONE have announced that they are stepping back from Pro Conti (tier 2) to Continental (tier 3) after a key backer, Factor bikes, left them. Factor are going to supply AG2R in 2017.

                    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/one-pro-cycling-to-drop-to-continental-level-in-2017/

Still, the article notes it's better that they take a step back now rather than overstretch and fold.

Today's dose of Sagan news is that he is bringing the rainbow jersey to the TDU.

Never been entirely clear where the money was coming from for ONE. Having to drop down a level because the bike provider has left suggests they are the latest in the long history of British teams who fly too close to the sun.

This is rather brilliant. Phil Gaimon, retiring but still technically a pro rider decides to use his extreme fitness in retirement from the tour season to go round LA, smashing strava King of the Mountains held by some guy who is a drug cheat.

Oh, that's marvellous. All power to him.

                            Sagan news:
He's had the surely horrible job of doing a charity ride in Malibu. You'll see he has his own logo and range of gear now.

And Vélo Magazine has named him rider of the year for 2016, awarding him his first Vélo d'Or.

Tour de Yorkshire route is out. Somewhat amusingly I had the email to tell me this while I was stood next to the stone commemorating the TdF visit to Harrogate this morning. Back there on April 29th then!

Tadcaster - Harrogate on the Saturday is again following the format of having a women's race over the same course and distance.

The final stage is apparently VERY hard. Pleased to see they're going to climb Shibden Wall. That'll sort them out, cobbled, proper steep. There's a vid somewhere on YouTube of the Kelloggs going up there in about 1988.

                                  That's awesome

On the downside, he's going to do Palomar even quicker than Horner. So the current ratio of my best to the KOM, which is about 2.1, is going to get even worse...

TJ Sport, the Chinese team which has taken on the Lampre-Merida franchise, is struggling to get its shit together to be approved for the World Tour. Could get very messy (Diego Ulissi suddenly becoming a free agent, perhaps?). But will probably be a massive fudge to get them signed up ahead of the TDU.

The in-house private group of luxury brand LVMH (Louis Vuitton. Moet, Hennessy and much more) have acquired a controlling interest in Pinarello.

Unclear what, if any, effect that will have the brand's racing activities, but it does give them a much deeper pocket than they have had before. It's LVMH's first real sporting investment, though its TAG Heuer and Hublot watch brands are both very active in sport sponsorship.

TAG Heuer have their name on Red Bull's F1 engines, don't they, but I assume they don't make them themselves?

Meintjes'agent says two WT teams have approached him in case TJ Sport fails to acquire its licence.

Red Bull use Renault engines, they're just badged as TAG after the two parties fell out in 2015.

Reports doing the rounds that the TJ Sport team has been saved thanks to some investment from Abu Dhabi, further details to follow later in the week.

Some new kits revealed today too. The old Etixx team are known as Quick Step again and are back in blue.

Bora are in a rather dull grey. Sagan presumably is still under contract to Tinkoff so can't be photographed advertising other sponsors yet.

Orica - Scott, as they are now known, went for a more eye catching publicity shot.

Watched most of the hearing, certainly found it more entertaining than your average Ardennes classic. The British Cycling fellas were evasive and unenlightening, not helped by some daft questions, at one point they were into a discussion of "is your medical store the size of a room or a cupboard?" Then Sutton appeared and was fantastically defensive, at one point attacking some MP saying "you should be proud of what your nation has achieved in the sport." He was also offered the chance to apologise for the "bitches" comment and declined to do so.

Brailsford seemed very calm and in control of his message, the moment when he revealed the contents of the package was pure theatre, he built up to it "I can tell you what was in the package... it was... (drum roll)... FLUMICIL!" That's not something that needs a TUE, so it begs the question as to why it's taken three months to get to this point.

However if it subsequently turns out that the package contained something else, then Brailsford would now be absolutely fucked.
