    Arnold Palmer RIP

It is no exaggeration to say that Arnold Palmer was the catalyst for golf becoming the sport it is today. Him becoming the world's best player, with his flamboyant, swashbuckling style of play, at the moment TV was expanding into live sports coverage, was perfect timing for both the sport and himself. He personally came up with the concept of golf's "Grand Slam" of four majors that we know today, when travelling to St. Andrews to try and add the Open to the Masters and US Open that he'd already won in 1960; he remarked to a journalist that to add the Open and the USPGA to those titles would constitute the "Grand Slam" of golf, and the idea stuck. His actual time at the top was surprisingly brief; he dominated from 1958 to 1962, but then along came the prodigious Jack Nicklaus, and from then on Arnie was always second best. If anything, though, that made him all the more popular, as the American public wouldn't really take to Nicklaus until much later on.

And to think he achieved all this despite having a metal rod impaled into his back!
