Me neither, but the possibilities of "Augmented Reality" (I wish it weren't called that) are intriguing, especially if they can project it onto transparent surfaces. I'd love it my car's windshield displayed everything I needed to know.

Surely they weren't 'placed' in locations one by one. Something built and used on this scale must have been populated by some kind of algorithm.

I think it uses the same location engine as Ingress, which in turn was based off landmarks in Google Maps (with users able to nominate new ones).
