    Voice-alikes

Individuals who resemble each other not just in accent and speech mannerisms, but also in timbre of voice or whatever the term is.

Having just seen BBC preview footage of Benedict Cumberbatch being interviewed about acting, I was struck by how similar he sounds (when being himself) to Tim Henman.

My colleague was skyping today and I assumed it was with another colleague, cos it sounded like her.

'How's Trish?' I asked, as the call ended. It wasn't her, but in fact someone else I've met/known on and off, and until they were just a voice I hadn't noticed that they sound identical.

      As you were.

Listening to Mark Bowen co-commentating on the Wales-Portugal game this evening, I was struck by what a remarkably boring voice he has. It didn't help that he appeared to have been mixed rather low by the production team, or maybe that was just his words failing to muster the enthusiasm to escape his throat. Consequently I spent most of the match thinking how uncannily alike he sounds – in tone and timbre, if not actual accent – to Fr. Fitzgerald in Father Ted, the priest with "the most boring voice" in 'A Christmassy Ted' whose, er, special talent helps the priests escape the lingerie department.

The CEO of Edwards Lifesciences, the leading maker of artificial heart valves, sounds a lot like late Phillies play-by-play guy Harry Kalas.

OTF's very own Sam Kelly always reminds me of William Hague when I listen to Hand of Pod.

A guy I know called Jonathan has exactly the same voice as the late Anthony H Wilson.

              Not helpful really.

                  Ha - Christ, imagine that.

(Even I were to, I suspect that this mightn't be the best week to play such a prank...)

Oh, jeez. You're right. As I'd never heard of her, I didn't know that connection.

Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton must feature on here somewhere surely?

Not quite relevant, but having heard Blair on the radio a lot today, he doesn't sound like himself anymore, but like an old man.

I mentioned this on the Euro 2016 media thread, and boy is this an opinion that bears repeating, but I think the speaking voices of Iain Dowie and Billy Bragg are very similar.

Ha, some good calls on here. Liking both Tarrant/Clarke and Hopkins/Burton.

[not arguing with any of the others btw, just don't know one or more of each of the other pairs very well.]

It'd have been some coincidence if you'd also known Jonathan. He's a friend of Goldie's if that's any help.

                                Not a euphemism.

I always think that Jason Mohammed's voice reminds me of someone else's whenever I hear him on Final Score, but I can't place the vocal doppelganger I'm thinking of.

What this thread lacks when compared to the various 'lookalike' threads over the years, are examples.

Go on, pitch up some Jason Mohammed and we'll see whether the combined might of OTF can name the voice...

David Pleat and ...I think it's Neil Warnock. One of the other occasional co-commentators anyway.

If I tune into a match late and I hear the voice, I have to wait until there's a player name that's slightly more challenging than Smith or Jones before I can be sure it's Pleat.

Still intrigued by the voice-over artist, Peter Dickson, who now makes a partial living out of imitating Patrick Allen's distinctively hammy tones long after his death. Robbie Savage, however, is merely Little Britain's Andy Pipkin, but with a much larger vocabulary.
