Yeah, she got a hospital pass there. An absolutely indefensible position.

Haven't been posting about Universal Credit because it's just too miserable for words. Dreading its introduction in my area. Plenty of news stories about it in the Guardian, Independent, Mirror; Dawn Foster and Frances Ryan are just two of the admirable journalists who plug away at keeping this in the public eye.

DWP is launching another legal challenge to block the publication of reports; these ones deal with UC

They appeal so much stuff and it costs loads.

Massive impact of legal aid cuts on benefit cases

Strictly speaking this is about legal aid, but the connection is explicit in the headline. In some areas these cuts have completely fucked Citizens' Advice Bureaux and there is no longer any independent advice available for folk who need to challenge benefits decisions. They have to approach the council or DWP for advice on challenging... the council or DWP.

Universal credit: Households to miss out on benefits over festive season

Thousands of people on universal credit will not be paid over the festive season or will get a reduced payment.

Those affected are among the 67,000 people who work and are paid weekly, the government says. Some will have to reapply for the benefit.

That is because there are five paydays in December, so their monthly income will be too high to qualify - the benefit is based on a calendar month.

Must admit, the present government's attempt to render the political landscape as an episode of Yes, Prime Minister as written by an upper-class neo-Nazi sociopath is looking pretty impressive.

Apparently the crumbling economy is all the fault of those dastardly disabled types...

PIP entitlements to be reviewed for people with disabling mental health problems. This follows December's High Court ruling that the PIP changes were discriminatory. According to the article the DWP will not be appealing the ruling.

Work And Pensions Committee report on PIP & ESA assessments

"I ‘arose from the chair without any difficulty’. I was in bed the whole time (she let herself in) and I only have the one chair in the room and she was sitting in it. She said that I had no difficulty reading with my glasses yet I do not wear glasses to read."

"For the twelve days we took considering and writing on the form, my mother refused to eat, drink, or sleep save the smallest amount. She began to self-harm from the stress and cry in the despair of admitting how she is limited, how she is constantly in pain, how she cannot complete simple tasks—'how her disability affects her': the very name of the form."

This is apparently important, unlike making errors and not correcting them. Or at least Perkins seems to think Portes not answering is worth commenting on, because the rest of the story reflects so well on him.

That story about the woman unable to get into the assessment centre - you couldn't make it up. Wicked.

This is pretty odd. The Press Association tweeted the opposite of what happened, and despite being corrected haven't changed it yet.

Ah, two of the grounds on which the case were brought were unsuccessful, but the third succeeded and the government have been refused leave to appeal. That still seems misleading from the PA, and Sky News have apparently been going with it.

#UniversalCredit has taken significantly longer to roll-out than intended, may cost more than the benefits system it replaces, and the DWP will never be able to measure whether it has achieved its stated goal of increasing employment.

As predicted by virtually every informed observer. Toxic combination of IDS hubris, arrogance & ignorance, & Osborne's determination to balance the budget on the backs of the poor.
