    Who goes... who stays

I dont want to rain on Dogbeaks parade but Allardyce was having Lascalles watched while at WHU. We're shedding three centre halves in a few weeks.
Would selling him to us be the sort of thing Ashley would do?

      Who goes... who stays

      Sheffield Wednesday

      ...

Jose Semedo waved a tearful farewell to the fans after Saturday's game. He's a hugely popular player - as far back as 2012 we had a "Semedo Day" at the City Ground - and has been with us since the League One days.

Caolan Lavery has seen his career stall this year, he's not good enough for this level. He'll go somewhere in League 1 and score a lot of goals if he gets regular football, he reminds me a bit of Ryan Lowe.

Felipe Melo (not that one) has been permanently injured so will probably be shifted out. Modou Sougou and Lewis McGugan have been squad players and might be kept on if we're not promoted. Claude Dielna, Sergiu Bus ("the Romanian Wayne Rooney") and Marnick Vermijl have all had long spells out on loan and will probably not appear for the club again.

Of the players we've had in on loan, Vincent Sasso, Michael Turner and Joe Bennett - thank you and goodbye. Aiden McGeady has been too inconsistent and won't be kept either. Alex Lopez has "done a Jermaine Johnson" as it's known in the trade and been brilliant for the first and last month of the season with little in between. Daniel Pudil has been our first choice left back, the club tried to sign him permanently from Watford in January but it didn't go through for whatever reason.Sheffield Wednesday
I could see Semedo going somewhere like Chesterfield and then coming back in some sort of coaching role.

It's a real shame about Lavery. We'll always have memories of that Leeds game though. I'd have loved him to succeed, like Drew Talbot (who has just been released by Chesterfield)

Melo looked very good towards the end of last season, but his long term injury this year has been a pity - and a bit of a mystery. I really hoped he would have been the man to replace Hutchinson. Talking of which, I think you're being a little harsh on Lopez. He's been far better since being in the 'Hutchinson' role than when he was pushed further forward. Seems to be getting used to the pace of the game too, and he was injured for a significant portion of the middle of the season.

I liked the look of Sasso, but he was always seemingly guaranteed to make at least 2 critical mistakes a game, which isn't that great for a centre back. Turner has been v poor.

Hoping to see more of Stobbs next season (assuming Div 2) and maybe a little look at George Hirst. I'm not sure Sougou or McGugan will stay, I don't think they're Carvalhal type players.

Pochettino has signed a new contract. Expect similar from most of the key first team players.

Peter Beardsley - special shout out to my favourite NUFC player of all time for putting together a 2-8-12 record with the U21s

That's a shocking record, and it must hurt to have to acknowledge that Beardsley is responsible for it.

This is why they say never go back.

Who Liverpool will sign, apart from the already confirmed deals for Matip and Grujic, I have no idea. There's talk of Gotze, that seems to have intensified now given that he's been told to find a new club by Bayern and Dormund have signed Dembele.

More interesting is the outgoings I think. Skrtel is a cert to leave, to the point where he posted a message to Coutinho on instagram congratulating him on picking up some awards at the club awards do last night and saying "it was an honour to play on the same team as you". Jose Enrique has already been released. Adam Bogdan will be too, along with Tiago Ilori, who can't even get a game when the entire first team is being rested. Jerome Sinclair from the academy will leave, with any fee likely to be determined by a tribunal. Jordan Rossiter is joining Rangers on a free.

Probable sales include Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen, (though Klopp seems to like him he only starts when Can, Milner and Henderson are rested or unavailable) and Christian Benteke, who West Ham are apparently quite keen on.

There has been rumours that Jordan Henderson will be sold, though I'm not sure how likely that is. Jordon Ibe might be sold, as he seems to have regressed despite showing early promise, especially in Klopp's first few games. I think Sheyi Ojo's recent performances have probably pushed him above Ibe in the pecking order for the squad for the Europa league final.

I have no idea what Klopp will do with Markovic, whether he'll give him a chance to impress or whether he'll be sold on is anyone's guess. In the last few months under Rodgers he was used as a wing back, and invariable substituted at half time.

Mamadou Sakho could be sacked, depending on the outcome of his disciplinary case.

                Who goes... who stays

Summer of change as per usual at Watford, especially with Flores now confirmed to go.

Out of contract: Joel Ekstrand, Uche Ikpeazu, Bernard Mensah, Jorell Johnson, Josh Doherty, George Byers, Alfie Young, Mahlondo Martin.

Ekstrand was a regular in the first three years of the Pozzo era, before getting a long-term injury towards the back-end of last season. We've upgraded, and he had a bit of a grouse a few weeks ago. Ikpeazu was signed after he graduated from Reading's academy three years ago, but has spent his entire time with the club on loan in the lower leagues. The rest are academy graduates with little to no first-team experience. The under-21s have a horrible record under Harry Kewell (albeit in their first season competing formally), and are apparently to be cleared out in favour of the more successful under-18s. All out.

We also apparently own a Spanish defender called Juanfran (not the proper one), who's been on loan at Deportivo and may be out of contract. Who knows.

                End of loan: Nathan Ake.

Has generally impressed although faded of late. Says he wants to go back to Chelsea, but I wouldn't rule out a return, permanent or otherwise, given their glut of players.

Could be off: Mario Suarez, Jose Jurado, Valon Behrami, Obbi Oulare, Juan Carlos Paredes, Steven Berghuis, Jose Holebas, Odion Ighalo, Sean Murray, Essaid Belkalem, Mathias Ranegie.

In January, you'd have thought Ighalo was going to be sold for £20m and everyone basically expected it to happen (including himself, it seems) but since then he's forgotten how to play football. Hard to imagine a really big club picking him up now, but there's reputed interest from China and someone might take a punt on getting him on another streak. Jurado was a default pick under Flores, but played out of position and too often the onus was solely on him to do anything creative. That said, he's yet to score (or possibly even get an assist) and I think he's just too lightweight and slow for England.

Suarez arrived in January as another Flores acolyte, and has shown classy touches but also looked slow - whether his legs are gone or he just needs a full pre-season is up for debate. Behrami started the season in the first-team but got injured/suspended, couldn't get past Watson and Capoue and then slipped behind Suarez. Had a moan on social media recently, and we've possibly got one too many midfielders of his type.

Holebas arrived from Roma where he'd been starting and was none too pleased about being displaced by Ake for large parts of the season. Has played well when called upon. Berghuis was one of our bigger money signings for this season but Flores didn't seem keen on him. He has featured of late from the bench, during which time he's blown hot and cold, while being given a decent reception on the basis he's not a central midfielder being played out of position on the wing. Understandable to think both have been harshly treated but perhaps not reacted well, whether they stay depends on whether the club thinks they have the right attitude and whether they're prepared to risk another year on the sidelines.

Oulare was signed as our third striker, a big raw thing from Belgium. Has barely made the subs bench since the autumn, cup appearance aside and I imagine he'll go out on loan at least. Paredes simply isn't good enough.

Murray was a star of the academy but has played less and less each season since he broke through. Might be kinder to give him a fresh start. Belkalem and Ranegie were unsuccessful recruits of a few years ago - Belkalem has spent the entire season training with us without any suggestion he's going to play, I'm not sure if Ranegie has come into the club since he finished a loan in China in January.

With the exception of the last four they were all signed for this season.

Out on loan: Gabriele Angella, Giedrius Arlauskis, Miguel Layun, Daniel Pudil, Matej Vydra.

Angella was a regular for the two seasons prior to this but had a mixed year on loan at QPR it seems. Would probably only be fourth choice centre-back if he stayed and he may fancy better. Pudil will likely go to Wednesday. Arlauskis signed in the summer, I think he expected to be number one but was never going to get past Gomes and he looked dodgy in the two games he played. Went on loan to Espanyol in January, where I know he's made mistakes as well. Layun never really convinced in his six months with us (although we were playing him in midfield) before we loaned him to Porto in the summer. He's impressed there, and they have a buy clause but are apparently trying to get him on the cheap. We do have a full-back problem but I'd be surprised to see him back. Vydra was signed in the summer after a successful second spell on loan, but then Flores didn't fancy him and he was loaned to Reading where he had a nightmare. He's been fantastic for us in the past and I think he's conceivably a Premier League player, but a lot depends on his attitude.

Staying: Heurelho Gomes, Miguel Britos, Sebastian Prodl, Troy Deeney, Nordin Amrabat, Rene Gilmartin, Adlene Guedioura, Costel Pantilimon, Ikechi Anya, Almen Abdi, Ben Watson, Étienne Capoue, Ola Adeyemo, Tommie Hoban, Alex Jakubiak, Dennon Lewis.

Latter three are well-regarded academy graduates - Hoban's the only one to have played much for us, but he's been injured most of the season. Gilmartin and Pantilimon are reserve keepers (although the latter may fancy something better). Adeyemo is some kid we signed. Guedioura has been a default sub, but I suspect they'll keep him around. Abdi starts regularly, perhaps is slowing up but again I think he'll be kept as an option. Amrabat hasn't done much since arriving in January, but he's got a reasonable record in La Liga so imagine they'll be happy for him to start again under a new manager. The rest are core - although a few tremors about Deeney being off in the last few days...

Abdoulaye Doucoure and Adalberto Penaranda were signed in January and are rocking up after spending the time since then at Pozzo-owned Granada, while Isaac Success is apparently joining them on the same plane. We may well be the club paying the tribunal fee for Liverpool's Jerome Sinclair. There's various incoming scholars as well.

Tiago Ilori! It's far worse than that. Four months on loan at the Villa last season, and he couldn't get a game.

As for who stays and who goes, at the Villa it's largely a case of who can we find anyone gullible enough to take off our hands.
Ayew will probably go I suppose, as one of the few players to show any kind of ability over the season he's the most likely to attract interest. N'Zogbia and Richardson are history, of the sort the London Dungeon specialises in. As for the rest, who really cares? Some of them will probably do OK at the lower level, some will want to leave because they're too good to play Championship football (in their own minds, at least) but may be disappointed. I don't think there's anybody whose departure would be a devastating blow.

                          Going:

David Cornell, Joseph Mills (already signed for Perth Glory), Theo Vassell, Jack Truelove, Mike Jones, Jordan Bove and Rhys Turner. The only surprise is Jones; a very good attacking midfielder who hasn't replicated his performances from last season. Mills also disappointed this year.

Nine more players are discussing new deals, but they won't all stay. Anthony Gerrard would be the biggest loss. Either way it's going to be a summer of major change.

Burnley released their retained list today, which seems ot be a list of players leaving.

Paul Robinson and Joey Barton have been offered new deals. Barton is probably going to sign for Rangers, though.

Matt Gilks, Matt Taylor, Lloyd Dyer and Michael Duff are all released. Taylor was crimininally underused IMO and had a superb minutes/goals ratio. I believe his legs may have gone though. And Lloyd Dyer, we'll always have your big coat and that half an hour at Birmingham. I think Gilks has gone to Preston and Duffo is retiring and taking up a job with the Under 18s. Also released are goalkeeper Daniel Nizic and Jason Gilchrist, the latter of whom seemed to have a promising future ahead of him.

plus a slew of players not having development deals extended/upgraded and end-of-loans

It leaves a pretty skeleton squad, especially when you consider that a few of the retained players (Keane, Hughes, Carr) were out of favoured and loaned out this season. The two 'keepers released is expected, both had fallen behind a youngster in the pecking order. A new deal for Simpson was discussed, but it never got as far as an offer. The main disappointment is Donaldson. 12 months ago I would have pegged him as the outstanding player in the squad, but can understand why the new manager doesn't agree - he has done nothing of note for months, mostly as he has been semi-crocked most of the time.

Wimbledon have released Akinfenwa (as discussed on the play-off thread), wide man Sean Rigg and left back Callum Kennedy. The second of those is for the best as he's probably been the most frustrating, under-performing member of the squad this season.

I'm slightly surprised by Kennedy but he's always been slightly on the fringes this season. He was actually released two years ago and ended up resigning but I don't think that'll happen again.

The excellent loan signing from Burton, centre half Darius Charles has singed permanently now his contract with his parent club has elapsed. This is a great start to squad strenghtening as he and fellow loanee Derby keeper Kelle Roos were the catalysts for the defensive strength of the second half of the season.

New contracts have been agreed with irreplaceable, inspirational captain & right back Barry Fuller, 37 year old midfield dynamo Danny Bulman and fellow midfielder George Francomb.

Bulman seems ridiculously superfit for a man of his age so any concerns are allayed but personally I would have let Francomb go as he hasn't delivered this season. Then again, Ardley's insistence on playing with inverted wingers means that all of the club's wide players have disappointed this season.

                                    .
