    Cricket Season!

I was wondering if the waiting period would be waived given that the whole reason for their playing for England rather than Ireland is no longer present.

Four teams separated by four points at the top of the County Championship at the moment. It's shaping up nicely.

No mention of Northants and Notts scoring something like 850 runs off 98 overs, between them?

Sadly such hitting has become almost mundane, though Kleinveldt can probably thing himself unlucky to hit 120 off 60 balls and end up on the losing side.

Still can't quite get my head around Dale Steyn playing for Glamorgan.

Luckily they remembered how to play just in time for the Roses match.

                      Cricket Season!

Went to Derbyshire v Worcestershire today. Haven't been to Derby for a few years but the ground has changed - they're building a functional structure housing new offices and press box at the far end. This meant the big stand had moved and they've moved away from conventional sequential seat numbering - I was in seat 90, next to 78 and in front of 12.

Jack Shantry has a splendidly silly action. He runs in, almost stops, then bowls off practically both feet. It must be efficient as he bowled an awful lot.

There was some early movement and Derby could barely get the ball off the square in the morning, then the wicket lost life and Madsen / Godelman put on 251 together. I'm not sure I've ever applauded for the 250 partnership before.

Crowd of about 300 or so.

                          Cricket Season!

Day of 2 halves at Scarbados today. An attritional few hours in the cold in which the game didn't move on much until the sun came out and Ballance ground his way to a century while Bresnan was carving out a disturbingly classy 50. Still champions...

                            Modern cricket:

Aneurin Donald (not a modern name!) is 209* off 124 balls on the first day of a championship match.

Joint fastest double century in terms of balls, though far longer in terms of time than previous first class records.

Eventually out when Derbyshire had 9 players out on the boundary.

                                Fine, none of you care.

Donald's initials AHT had always vaguely reminded me of JWHT Douglas. So if Johnny Won't Hit Today, Aneurin will.

Flat pitch? Maybe, though Derbyshire just got rolled for 177 in response.

He's 19 years old and genuinely Welsh.

                                  That's quite an amazing achievement.

Not to change the subject, but I was saddened to read that Mike Selvey won't be writing for the Grauniad after this season.

It clearly wasn't his choice and he is less than happy about the whole thing.

That's a real shame. Wouldn't have thought he was a natural fit for the Telegraph or Times. Maybe joining David Hopps at Cricinfo.

That is a huge shame. Selvey's writing is one of the things that drew me to cricket at a relatively late age.

What are Phil and Frances Edmonds doing these days? Another Bloody Tour still cracks me up.

The double century noted above is even more impressive given that some previous past records were against joke bowling. OTOH nowadays bats are heavier.

Both seem to be grifters of sorts; Phil sucks up to Mugabe and other dictators, Mark Thatcher style, Frances makes money from various commercial speaking jaunts and corporate waffle books.

Wealth estimated at 14 million in 2012.

Shame because she could write funny prose back in the blackwash era.

                                                    Cricket Season!

Went to the T20 "London Derby" tonight, Middlesex v Surrey at Lord's.

A good match - Mddlesex managing what is, I think, their record chase in this format to beat Surrey's 196 in front of a record English T20 crowd of 27,119.

That leaves Middx looking good for a quarter-final (possibly a home one) and Surrey looking down and out unless other results got their way.

The Middlesex supporter I was with is convinced they will counter decades of under-achievement with at least one trophy this season.

                                                    .
