    Panama Papers

Erm, this is pretty huge, isn't it?

In the first of what is probably going to be many related LOLZ, the comms manager of the Leave EU movement has declared that it's all bollocks.

Grab some popcorn, and watch the fun pour forth.

Who is caught up in this? The BBC reports a bunch of usual suspects... Oligarchs and dictators. Assad and Mubarak and a handful of Putin's mates are hardly shocking names for a little bit of dubious embezzlement

Irish Times says that they will be releasing stories on the Irish bits during the week. As a teaser they said that there is a connection to an address in Drumcondra in Dublin.

A former Irish taoiseach had his constituency office in Drumcondra.

Could all be a coincidence, of course.

edit: They have now released more information. It's not Ahern's address.

More to the point, what will it change? The people fingered will just sit tight until it blows over in a week or so.

If you have that much money you're effectively insulated from any meaningful consequences. If any of these people get taken down it'll be solely because they stepped on someone bigger's toes earlier on.

It'd be nice to see Bertie dragged into this thing, but by all accounts his life these days is so furtive and shadowy that it would be a pyrrhic victory at best.

The prime minister of Iceland, apparently. That would be the country that, according to feel-good Facebook memes, jailed the bankers who precipitated the economy's meltdown.

Why, Prime Minister of Iceland, why?

On the plus side for Panama, they now get maximum TV coverage for the city, so people like me can gawp and say "It's that big? That tall and shiny?". Quite a revelation.

Panama: not just a man, a plan, a canal.

Because he is from a centre-right party? The current Icelandic government was probably not greatly impressed by the court outcomes, and with their red-green predecessors role in starting the proceedings.

2.6 terabytes worth of data, apparently.

The cable leaks from a few years ago were 1.7 gigabytes.

It's going to take a while for the authorities to go through these.

If it is anything like the 10,000 names in the HSBC investigation, Osborne has already announced that there is nothing to see here.

No, as any pub quizzer could tell you, Panama hats come from Ecuador.

Would be very surprised if he were. In the meantime...

The prime minister’s spokeswoman said that Downing Street had responded to allegations about Ian Cameron in the past.

Asked if there was still any family money invested in the fund, she said: “That is a private matter.” She said the prime minister had “taken a range of action to tackle evasion and aggressive tax avoidance”.

Not all law firms operate under these principles

And if you are just interested in the structure and purpose of financial vehicles, there is still much to enjoy here, starting with the leaked memorandum from a Mossack Fonseca partner saying that "Ninety-five per cent of our work coincidentally consists in selling vehicles to avoid taxes" -- a weird coincidence! -- and perhaps culminating with this:

The leaked files show the firm regularly offered to backdate documents to help its clients gain advantage in their financial affairs. It was so common that in 2007 an email exchange shows firm employees talking about establishing a price structure – clients would pay $US8.75 for each month farther back in time that a corporate document would be backdated.
