England to play a 4-day Test against Ireland at Lords next summer before the Ashes gets going. One might argue that if it's 4 days, it isn't really a Test. Equally, the chances of it even making it to Day 4 could be fairly remote.

I think these are the 2018 Test match results so far:

          Afg W0 D0 L1
          Aus W2 D0 L3
          Ban W0 D1 L3
          Eng W1 D1 L3
          Ind W2 D0 L2
          Ire W0 D0 L1
          NZ W1 D1 L0
          Pak W2 D0 L1
          SA W5 D0 L3
          SL W3 D2 L1
          WI W3 D1 L1
          Zim W0 D0 L0
Calling a draw 'half a win' gives the following values for each team's 'winningness' this year in Tests.

          0.750 NZ
          0.700 WI
          0.667 Pak, SL
          0.625 SA
          0.500 Ind
          0.400 Aus
          0.300 Eng
          0.125 Ban
          0.000 Afg, Ire

West Indies and New Zealand having good results in both Tests and ODIs this year, then.

Simon Wilde made a rebuttal of the claim that Tests are only "real" if played over 5 days:

There’s a perception that Test cricket has always been a game played over five days and change would be an act of cultural vandalism. Rubbish. The first concerted effort at uniformity came only after the Second World War when England and Australia encouraged the idea that a Test match should last 30 hours (for many years Australia, and West Indies, continued to host matches over six days rather than five as a concession to the heat). Prior to that, England would stage matches of various lengths and in the space of four seasons in the 1940s hosted India and New Zealand over three days, South Africa over four and Australia over five, and because New Zealand were relatively weak, England played four-day Tests there until 1970/71. Provided the two parties agree, there is a persuasive case now for again tailoring the length of games according to the quality of the sides and the venue: clearly Tests in England tend to proceed at a faster rate than those, say, on the subcontinent.

I see that the seat I paid twenty quid for at this year's Headingley Test will set me back eighty quid for the Ashes. I paid not a huge amount more than that for tickets to five World Cup matches.

I dunno, maybe England will make a better fist of their second innings and stretch it out a bit.

Sri Lanka are about to wrap up a 2-0 win over South Africa. All the overs by SL in the match have been bowled by their three spinners, which may be a record.

Keshav Maharaj, South Africa's spinner, took nine wickets in the first innings. Now, Maharaj is not a bad spinner at all, but in 51 overs the three quicks took one wicket, and the spinner gets nine in 41 overs. I have a feeling that the wicket might have been a little too spinner-friendly.

UK residents can watch the Ireland v Afghanistan ODI on the red button or BBC website here:
                        https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/45248286

AFG 10/2 (2.5) so a good couple of early wickets for the hosts.

16/3 after 5.0 now. Afghanistan are 1-0 up in the three match series.

17/4 (9.0), looks like this could be a stroll. You don't often see a RR under 2.0 in an ODI!

Not such a stroll at all - Ireland need about 17 more but seven wickets down

I have just clocked that Monty Panesar is on Celebrity Masterchef and Graeme Swann on Strictly Come Dancing. I just hope they both put up a decent showing.

Panesar still seems to still habour hopes of a Test comeback, at least according to a World Service interview he did about a month ago, but he's done very little in the last five years or so. Played for Bedfordshire in 2017.

Essex's Peter Siddle - as he is surely known the world over - has earned a recall to the Australia Test side after two years since his last cap. Five uncapped players.

He looked a step beyond all the other essex bowlers when I saw them a couple of weeks ago. The same way as Morkel did for Surrey.

Pakistan batting first in the match with India which has just got underway. Two runs from the first over.

Pandya has been stretchered off. Pulled up after his run, possibly has done something to his hip or back.

Pakistan have recovered from those early wickets, 73/2.

India won comfortably and have now done the same to Bangladesh. Pakistan are in a real battle against Afghanistan and the brilliant Rashid Khan. They have just lost their 6th wicket and the Afghans are favourites - this after Afghanistan and Bangladesh knocked Sri Lanka out in the group stage.
