There’s a perception that Test cricket has always been a game played over five days and change would be an act of cultural vandalism. Rubbish. The first concerted effort at uniformity came only after the Second World War when England and Australia encouraged the idea that a Test match should last 30 hours (for many years Australia, and West Indies, continued to host matches over six days rather than five as a concession to the heat). Prior to that, England would stage matches of various lengths and in the space of four seasons in the 1940s hosted India and New Zealand over three days, South Africa over four and Australia over five, and because New Zealand were relatively weak, England played four-day Tests there until 1970/71. Provided the two parties agree, there is a persuasive case now for again tailoring the length of games according to the quality of the sides and the venue: clearly Tests in England tend to proceed at a faster rate than those, say, on the subcontinent.

Keshav Maharaj, South Africa's spinner, took nine wickets in the first innings. Now, Maharaj is not a bad spinner at all, but in 51 overs the three quicks took one wicket, and the spinner gets nine in 41 overs. I have a feeling that the wicket might have been a little too spinner-friendly.

UK residents can watch the Ireland v Afghanistan ODI on the red button or BBC website here:

AFG 10/2 (2.5) so a good couple of early wickets for the hosts.

Panesar still seems to still habour hopes of a Test comeback, at least according to a World Service interview he did about a month ago, but he's done very little in the last five years or so. Played for Bedfordshire in 2017.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 08-09-2018, 23:10.

Essex's Peter Siddle - as he is surely known the world over - has earned a recall to the Australia Test side after two years since his last cap. Five uncapped players.

India won comfortably and have now done the same to Bangladesh. Pakistan are in a real battle against Afghanistan and the brilliant Rashid Khan. They have just lost their 6th wicket and the Afghans are favourites - this after Afghanistan and Bangladesh knocked Sri Lanka out in the group stage.
