They held the Commonwealths there in September a while back, presumably they'd go for that again (or as late as the IOC will allow)
The temperature doesn't vary much month to month, but the later into the autumn you go, it would get wetter.

Yes, it was the humidity as much as the heat I was thinking of. I went there in April, and you wouldn't have wanted to run a marathon in it!

I also went one April, and climbing the steps up to the caves on the outskirts (can't remember the name) nearly finished me off.

Batu! We did that too (and I was terrified of the monkeys)

I always wondered what had happened to Five Star. I never realised they had got into Italian politics (Although their presence in it is no more unlikely than the usual mix of business tycoons and porn actresses).

I'm starting to get the feeling that Budapest may sneak in as a dark horse and get these Olympics. It's based on the (perhaps mistaken) belief that their government may be able to force it through in a way others countries' don't seem to be able to.

Not sure about the money for it tough.

I haven't heard any negative opinions about Los Angeles hosting the Olympics from any local politicians or civic leaders. A lot of people still remember the 1984 games with really fond memories, and our public transportation is far better now than it was back then. For events held in the metro area (I think they have plans for some events further out in Ventura County) there are train lines nearby, and our bus system is very extensive (if slow). Plus, the subway extension to UCLA should be done by 2024 if we are awarded the games. That's pretty much the only reason I'd like to have the games. I'd prefer to have the train come to UCLA by 2024 instead of waiting another 11 years.

Rome has withdrawn its bid after the city council voted to oppose it.

Now down to Paris, Los Angeles, and Budapest.

If the Olympics ever stops being a corruptathon and settles on one or two permanent sites, I think Los Angeles/SoCal would be a good candidate.

The weather is good. It's big and rich enough to absorb the crowds. It's improving its public transit steadily anyway. Every conceivable kind of sports facility is already there and if it isn't - like, if they had to build a new velodrome or a canoeing facility - it's a good place to build it because the weather would allow it to be used year round after the games - by the US and other Olympic teams, universities. The USOC could move most of its Olympic training centers there (why is it in Colorado Springs anyway?)

People always assume Athens would be the best permanent site, but I don't get the feeling Greece needs that right now and many of the facilities it built after 2004 are rotting. It's very sad.

Garcetti's gotta be hoping LA gets it in 2028, so he's far enough removed in time that his ambitions don't come unstuck through the inevitable corruption and incompetence scandals that come from hosting an Olympics.

Announcement scheduled for 5pm today in LA apparently, which would seem to be a jump on the IOC doing so in September as I thought was he plan.

A rather depressing piece about the prospects for the Tokyo games from a journalist who has lived there for years.

Why are the Olympics nailed on for mid-July-August?

The Sydney Games were 15 September-1 October so it’s not like nobody has seen the Olympics in late September for donkey’s years.

Give the planet another 10 years and let's see what summer is like in Los Angeles. A Los Angeles Olympics held in June would probably be the safest option in terms of climate. Definitely not August through October.

As the article notes, they are set for that period because that's what the Tokyo Bid Committee recommended.

Whereas the '64 Games were in the middle of October.

Now that the winter games are staggered, they could have the “summer” Olympics in January, except then the NBA might not participate.
