Always interesting to hear that another link in the chain of human evolution has been found, but the fragmentary nature of the remains must led one to be sceptical before making extravagant claims. Certainly, if it was to be a primaeval ancestor, one imagines that it would be classified under Australopithecus, rather than Homo, and would a 1m+ year old humanoid really exhibit religious behaviour?

I can't help but think that the "religious" claim is connected to National Geographic's recent alliance with Fox, which now controls all of NG's media outlets.
For those who didn't read the piece, the discovery is the cover story in the October issue of National Geographic

The biggest note of caution regarding genus is that the remains haven't been dated, so they're mostly going on morphology at this point.
