Fuck Off John - Endgame Edition

    Er, or not.

What's up, Barack? Checking my email, I got the NYT headlines email at 3:44am, and you didn't let me know until 5:45am. I thought I was supposed to know first...

Biden did come up with the "noun + verb + 9/11" line talking about Giuliani, so he can be funny.

      Noun, verb, POW:
In an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, McCain, 71, said his priority was to keep Americans in their homes in tough economic times.
Then he recalled his Vietnam experience.

      "I spent 5 1/2 years in a prison cell without -- I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table. I didn't have a table. I didn't have a chair," he said.

"I spent those 5 1/2 years ... not because I wanted to get a house when I got out."

I take it that Leno did not deadpan: "No, you spent those 5 1/2 years because your captors didn't let you go."

This is beginning to sound like former conservative leader candidate David Davis' "I came from a single-parent family on a council estate" schtick, which he didnt like to talk about in every single interview or speech.

To hell with Jay Leno and his fawning over Republicans like McCain and Schwarzenegger.

late edit: that was McCain's 13th time on the Tonight Show. Pamela Anderson, Dr. Phil, and Jennifer Love Hewitt have also been on that many times. Thank god he's not a celebrity like Obama.

Brillaint--Fox attacked Michelle Obama over something she didn't say:

Fox News' Megyn Kelly noted that during her DNC speech Michelle Obama said, "The world as it is just won't do," and then Kelly continued: "If you replace 'world' with 'country', you are back to the same debate, arguably, that you have been having about Michelle Obama's feelings about the country. Did she give her critics any fodder with that comment?"

I think Michelle Obama nailed it - as did the preposterously naff kids. Sure, she could have played on her own quite evident brilliance, and she's an extremely good stump speaker. But what she did was politically more important, I think; to scotch - perhaps forever - the suspicion that "they're not like us". Her brother's speech could have been me speaking about my sisters. Her story about the anxious father crawling along at 10mph, anxiously glancing in the rearview mirror; and the youngest daughter's knowing showing off for the crowd... it was pure schmaltz, but pure schmaltz is one of the things his campaign needs. So much for "patrician", so much for "aloof", so much for "exotic", "other". It quite deliberately had little to do with policy, but it was superb politics.

Hilary should be interesting. If she nails it, on the assumption that the "Clinton voters" who aren't behind BHO will "come home" if given her clear imprimatur, and a clear case against McCain, she hands him a six-, seven-point bump nationally, straight off the bat.

Latest scuzzlebutt is that McCain is considering a thursday Veep announcement, before Obama's speech - that would be such an egregious breach of protocal, the fact that they're even talking about it suggests they're far more worried than the Dems.

                  Repuke Veepstakes. My primary thought is that Joe Biden makes this very, very, very tough for McCain. Of the frontrunners;

Pawlenty will get torn apart at the stump by Biden. He'll be one to watch in future years, but just doesn't have the oomph now. It would be one thing if they had the election sewn up, and could grow him in the public eye oever eight years, but Biden will make him look like Ol' Danforth Quayle.

Romney is as good a debater as Biden, maybe better. But after the homes fiasco, he's probably unusable. Particularly against Biden, who with "a net worth of $70-150,000 dollars" is comfortably the poorest Senator, despite having been there 36 years. It sets up a narrative that McCain is desparate to get away from. His fundraising advzantage is also ballsed up by McCain's public financing.

Mike Huckabee could be a good maverick choice. He's very personable and likeable, quite handy on the stump, and brings out the Repuke base. But for all that McCain wil say he's running on his own cultural positions, not Huckabee's, he's total fucking electoral poison to independents and potential swong Democrats, and highlights the fact that McCain's own positions are not so hugely different from The Huck's. Also, he's known to fancy his own chances in 2012.

Sarah Palin would be a superb choice, but for two, maybe one-and-a-half things. She's photogenic, a woman, of the people, competent, and engaging. She shores up the base just fine, without antagonising anyone else. But she totally fucks up McCain's "experience" narrative.

So the best of a bad bunch is, I think, Joe Lieberman. Who is a fucking terrible choice. At least, he's terribly high risk. If it works, it could be a game-changer, but it's not very likely to work.

I don't think it will be him, not least because the apparently close polling (which I've said I think misrepresents the actual situation) will convince the McCain campaign to play safe rather than take a punt. And I think all the safe choices are going to get their asses kicked. I'm pretty happy

Yeah, but... Republickins, wimmin... there's not many beyond Palin and Condi, and he sure doesn't want the narrative that comes with Condi.

Oh yeah, the other potential problem with Palin is that it could come across as a transparent suck-up to PUMA types. His TV ads are skirting the risible uncomfortably, and Clinton could knock that shit out of the park tonight.

I don't know. He puts the war front and centre, he'll be a monumental drag on party enthusiasm, it's not clear that the middle ground like him, and too many people think he's a total fucking nutjob. I haven't seen a breakdown of his positives v negatives, but I don't imagine it's great.

Line of the night so far to Bob Casey Jr. - "He voted with Bush 90% of the time; that's not a Maverick, that's a Sidekick!" He's doing well, he has the crowd chanting "Four! More! Months!". Sebelius was godawful.

The Obama camp seems supremely confident. So much so that I think they must have a killer card up their sleeve which they will reveal at the most opportune time to bury McCain. A Swift Tanker.

As for McCain's running mates, Lieberman's selection surely would not just undermine the flip-flop narrative, but kill it off. Not necessarily on policy, but on "expediently" changing sides. Can you trust a man who jumps ship at will in a position one cancer/heart attack/dementia away from the presidency?

I'm trying really hard to ignore most of this nonsense (not least because it now seems virtually certain that we're about to have a federal election of our own up here...although our elections last five weeks, not two years, so the BS is concentrated but short) - but what happened to the idea of Carly Fiorina as a Republican Veep? She seems like a much better idea than any of those on Toro's list.

And G-Man, don't discount the possibility that Obama's confidence comes down to his people just believing their own press too much. I'm very worried about this election.

Well given that McCain has reversed himself on a remarkable number of positions without any non-mercenary explanation and would actually be in the presidency, I'm not sure how persuasive that would be for people inclined to vote McCain.

I was just looking at another Web site that has Google ads, and for a brief while there was one for McCain that said, "Join our team"--with a photo of McCain and Lieberman. It didn't explicitly say anything about Lieberman, however. I wonder if this is a stealth way of announcing while not appearing to step on toes during the DNC.

Obviously, race is a tripwire topic for television, as Chris Matthews of MSNBC demonstrated all too irrepressibly on Tuesday.

Mr. Matthews said the Obamas are “like the Huxtables,” and praised Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Obama as exceptional role models: “They do everything right. They have great kids, they work their hearts off, they make it in their professions, they don’t live off welfare, they don’t commit crimes, they don’t live on affirmative action.”

I'll vote for Obama and all the democrats on my ballot (who will all win in my state and district easily anyway), but I'm done with politics in this country. Almost all of the discussion is about completely insubstantial issues and many of the commentors are idiots. Both party's platforms are loaded with proposals that won't actually solve the problem they purport to address. I've just had too much of this shit. I'd rather watch Smallville reruns than another minute of this farce.

Our country is doomed because of our own idiocy.

                                                  Ah, Maureen Dowd--you never disappiont.

I’ve been to a lot of conventions, and there’s always something gratifyingly weird that happens.

Dan Quayle acting like a Dancing Hamster. Teresa Heinz Kerry reprising Blanche DuBois. Dick Morris getting nabbed triangulating between a hooker and toes.

But this Democratic convention has a vibe so weird and jittery, so at odds with the early thrilling, fairy dust feel of the Obama revolution, that I had to consult Mike Murphy, the peppery Republican strategist and former McCain guru.

“What is that feeling in the air?” I asked him.

                                                  “Submerged hate,” he promptly replied.
Yes, because why wouldn't you ask a Republican strategist to give a fair picture of what's going on with the Democratic candidate?

She added insult to injury by coming out Tuesday night looking great in a blazing orange pantsuit and teaching the precocious pup Obama something about intensity and message. She thanked her “sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits,” and slyly noted that Obama would enact her health care plan rather than his.

She offered the electrifying fight that the limpid Obama has not — setting off paranoia among some Democrats that they had chosen the wrong nominee or that Obama had chosen the wrong running mate.
Hillary pantsuit mention? Check. Insult about Democratic candidate's readiness for a battle? Check. Double points for mention of completely unattributed and unverifiable negative feelings of the candidate that "some Democrats" have.
