    Dull lull? Gull cull mull!

As our "esteemed" representatives broke up for their summer recess, what was their most pressing political concern? The banking inquiry, or perhaps pre-budgetary preparations? No - but the perplexing pernicious and persistent peril posed by Laridae argentatus! Yes, seagulls have been displaying extraordinarily vicious behaviour, from lamb slaughter in Kerry to mobile phone theft in Dublin, not to mention a Dáil invasion. Still, Brendan O'Connor proved most amusing on the topic, invoking a Planet of the Gulls scenario, with civilisation in thrall to our new avian masters.

    They are a pain though.

I agree with Jongudmund. Seagulls they aren't nice and they do need culling. They're just flying rats really, a bit like pigeons.

Surely Royston and his dogs could solve this in a fortnight.

There's no such thing as a seagull.

Irish ones tend to mostly be herring gulls, though black-backed are also common.

In many urban areas, pigeons are a problem. In my neck of the woods that problem has been significantly curtailed through the introduction of urban-dwelling falcons. It only required a couple of nests originally, those birds of prey have now spread throughout the city. There are still a lot of pigeons around, but they are active, healthy and nest in more remote areas, and their negative impact far smaller.

I don't know if gulls have predators in Britain, other than foragers in their nesting grounds, like foxes. I would guess that birds of prey feed on young gulls.

In the cities they rule the roost so to speak.

And scatter trash everywhere rooting through the bins.

Gull hating in the new hot topic. I am not sure why they obviously can't fly a bird of prey during the match though. They aren't really known for attacking footballs, mascots or people.

No such bird as the seagull, Paul.

No, herring gulls are the problem.

I remember, when I first moved to Bath, there was a headline on the front of the Bath Chronic - "Gull menace". Having just moved from the murder capital of Britain, I was underwhelmed and have never been able to take part on the shock and awe about them since.

It's , surely, that resorts not only to that level of petty pedantry, but to that particular example?
