$2.25 for a million litres of water

That is the extortionate fee Nestlé will be paying to suck-up British Columbia's groundwater, beginning later this year. They probably feel quite aggrieved as up to now they've been getting it for nothing. Not a cent. All those bottles of "Spring Water" they sell for — coincidentally — about $2.25 each, have been free.

Arguably we shouldn’t be selling water at all. If we do though it’s a natural resource that’s uncontestably more important than oil, for instance, and should be priced accordingly. Québec charges $70 per miillion litres for it and Nova Scotia $140. (That’s not enough either IMHO, but at least their numbers are somewhat credible.) British Columbia's government however — while cutting funding to health care and education for over a decade — likes to be a good corporate partner. So while wildfires blaze across the province, and water rationing is in place almost everywhere, it's willing to give away our water for the price of a chocolate bar.

If you think this is wrong, help us out by signing this petition. Thanks.

Yes, it's suddenly getting a lot of attention locally. Largely because water shortages have resulted in unprecedented usage restrictions in the Vancouver and Victoria areas. I'm inclined to think this would have slid by with barely a murmur otherwise. After all it's been going on for years with no one taking any notice..

It's time to take a closer look at the NAFTA fine print, at least it's public, unlike the TPP.
