    Saudi action in Yemen

News agencies reporting that Saudi Air Force attempted to intercept an aid flight earlier today, and when the plane refused to divert, The Saudis bombed the runway in Sanaa. This means now that no aid flights can land in Sanaa, and the flight that my organisation planned tonight to evacuate 142 foreign nationals stuck in Yemen is now unable to depart, with no way out and an increasing humanitarian crisis looming.

    Guardian report here.

The flight that was chased across airspace was an International Red Cross flight. I have serious concerns that this is going to get much, much worse, especially if this turns into a proxy war in Yemen (there are some reports that it is already that).

    Yikes.

Is there actually any "coalition" here, or are the Saudis using an Americanism?

The coalition consists mainly of GCC states, with a bit of US intelligence support. The Saudis have leaned quite heavily on their neighbours to support the offensive, and have also put pressure on Pakistan to join in. I think all the 'active' flights have been Saudi.

        As I thought.

They aren't going to trust others for this kind of action, and may encounter difficulty in convincing them that it is necessary.

I share your concern that this will get worse before it gets better (which is scary, given how bad it already is).

Best of luck getting your people out.

Quick update - our plane was the last one out before the bombing, so we were able to assist in the evacuation. They arrived in Khartoum early this morning. All future flights are now suspended, so that's the last evacuation flight until they fix the runway and the Saudis guarantee safe airspace.

I guess that's a little bit of good news. How is this getting so little publicity? The Saudis actively preventing aid arriving and evacuations leaving, in a war zone, would normally be something that would garner a little international outrage.

The Saudis are a key member of the [strike]Empire[/strike] coalition, so they're not giong to get a lot of negative coverage in the MSM.

Saudi Arabia doesn't have much of a standing army, at least in the way relatively populous arab countries do, because the regime/royal family would fear a military coup, so they often rely on mercenaries from countries like Pakistan for their ground troops, while the air force and officers are inner circle saudis. They will also rely on their air force to fulfill their military goals because they don't have the boots on the ground.

Human Rights Watch report that Saudi Arabian air strikes are using cluster bombs, which are 'indiscriminate by nature', in Saada province. Report here.

Sanaa airstrip still closed - no aid coming in or people getting out. We hear rumours that we may be able to operate on Thursday, but it's still uncertain.

UN report into Saudi-led strikes in Yemen raises questions over UK role

"Evidence that Saudi-led coalition conducted widespread airstrikes against civilian targets in violation of international law.

The panel documented that the coalition had conducted airstrikes targeting civilians and civilian objects, in violation of international humanitarian law, including camps for internally displaced persons and refugees; civilian gatherings, including weddings; civilian vehicles, including buses; civilian residential areas; medical facilities; schools; mosques; markets, factories and food storage warehouses; and other essential civilian infrastructure, such as the airport in Sana’a, the port in Hudaydah and domestic transit routes."

Fast-forward to 2017 and the Saudi attacks and blockade on Yemen are starving the country. Estimates are that 130 children are dying in Yemen every day from malnutrition. Aid workers cannot get in. Hospitals have extremely limited resources.

Someone needs to have more than a quiet word with the Saudis about this.

And that someone obviously isn't Theresa May. Britain is selling 48 Typhoons to the Saudis to carry on bombing the shit out of Yemen.

Hold on a minute. How bad must Ethiopia be if people are migrating to Yemen?

They use Yemen as a stopping point on the way to Saudi Arabia:

There is also migration in the opposite direction:

Bombing a prison and the world is silent. Still it's jobs for the UK and that's vital for Brexit Britain.

I have a real sense of foreboding. I was cheered when John Bolton was dismissed, but all the optimism gained from losing that spiteful warmonger has all but dissipated.

So the Yemen rebels have claimed responsibility. But US gonna blame Iran anyway. And let's not talk about the fact that the Saudis are a bunch of blood thirsty hospital bombers.

Things wrong on so many levels here
