Are you sure it wasn't Wes Brown?

Suspended by the club as well

A club statement said: “Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time.”

By releasing his name and revealing a crime being investigated, the world (just look at twitter) has declared him a guilty nonce. No need for police questioning, or a trial.

That was all before he was officially arrested, which was announced a couple of hours later.

No doubt in the inevitable melee to reach the top, everybody will react calmly and evenly to the news, and discuss it thoughtfully and with respect to everyone concerned. Of course they will.

Or more likely, the girl is named before midnight, someone firebombs Johnson's house and Katie Hopkins butts in with her view of proceedings.

Calm tranquility never sold a paper.

If he instead played in the NFL, his club would stand behind him while the league tried to work out a way to downplay / cover things up.

On the other hand, naming those arrested for sexual offences appears to encourage other victims to come forward. That isn't to say that there is nothing worthwhile in what KGR said, but there is a counter-argument that anonymity for the accused doesn't help justice.

Coming so soon after football fans got to use racism as a tool for tribalism, the thought of the banter bus pulling up to share this story makes me feel a bit ill.

Anonymity for the accused in such cases would be a terrible idea.

His surname is going to work against him, predictably.

But once the case would be duly conducted along standard procedures, surely anonymity would better serve both the victim and the accused? As things stand, by releasing the name into the public domain, the only way that an unprejudiced trial can occur is through selecting twelve jurors completely disinterested in football, and even then, as KGR stated, media reportage could still make total neutrality impossible.

There's no evidence to suggest this, no. And lots to suggest the opposite. So no.

because? you do like to make assertions without supporting evidence- or even an argument. As here saying there's "lots of evidence" without indicating what any of it is.

Sometimes, yeah. Especially when privileged types cry their salty man-tears for rapists and the like.

Because for all the reasons it's a terrible idea in every case, plus lots of others which anyone who actually gave a fuck instead of simply wanking off on here to defend sleazy men would go find out about.

                                  Do your own research.

I guess your attitude to debate comes from spending so long in a democratic centralist organisation where you were reliant on reading the paper to discover what your opinion ought to be.

Nope, I have always thought "debate" was a bag of wank, even before joining my first DC organisation at the age of seven.

One of the things that has come from 'Yewtree' is the number of people who have come forward to give their story, and expose some of the fucking sleazy cunts who hide behind their fame and stature and use it as a mask to cover the revolting bastard that lies beneath.
This has persuaded me that every opportunity must be taken to help victims come forward and maybe get the prosecution that rapists and perverts deserve.
Should they turn out to have made up the story then that is another case entirely, but a couple of people telling lies should not get in the way of justice.

Are you applying this to all trials, or just sexual offences? Because I don't see that sexual offences differ in this regard. Were the trials of MPs accused of fiddling their expenses or Andy Coulson, Rebekah Brooks et al rendered prejudiced by news of their arrests being public?

It's hardly Johnson's fault, but in my mind he is forever associated with reasons why you should never watch football in a pub.
I never enjoyed it anyway because you're pretty much trapped in a small space with dickheads screaming or applauding at a TV screen and shouting banalities like 'TRACK THE RUNNERS -FUCKING TRACK THE RUNNERS!!', but I have memories of some absolute weapon (cheers, Gero) standing behind us screaming 'COME ON A.J!' any time he touched the ball. The over-familiarity with A.J is nauseating enough, see also Giggsy/ Scholesy, but the fact that he made himself look even more stupid in a room full of stupid was quite a feat.
