    Discharge

    So, Discharge, then.

I kinda started listening to their sonic assault back in my teens, having learned that they were an influence on my then (and possibly still now) favourite band, Anthrax.

Years have passed with me paying no mind to them at all, until - on a whim - I picked up a copy of Society's Victims for the princely sum of 6 quid.

Fuck. I mean, FUCK. Seriously angry stuff, which I didn't connect with as a teen but now completely understand.

    Hat doffed.

WE'VE BEEN SHIT ON FOR FAR TOO LONG

They're a massive influence on early Metallica too.
At the time they were the fastest thing anyone had ever heard.
    Seems really tame now.

    Great at the time.

Great now, to these ears. The speed thing - or now, relative lack of - aside, it stands up well.

        and

There s no real music - and I'm just shoutin and screamin'

I read a positive review of their first 45 in Sounds and ordered it from Wax Trax. Raw as shit and perfect for my music tastes at the time. As formulaic as it goes - minimal lyrics and a short, wailing guitar solo right in the middle of the song. Dug that all their 45 and 12" covers were in black and white.

But what a turnaround in the mid/late 80s w/ Cal becoming Kelvin and the throaty shouts morphing to godawful falsetto.

Listening to them now - Never Again and State Violence State Control (their music ability having improved as has the production) still have a powerful sound.

Why aren't there bands doing this stuff now?

There are. In every town and city.

This superb publication lists scene reports from all over the world and links to local fanzines.

The CD reissues for Why and Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing both contain early singles as bonus tracks. That's the way to go.

And to affirm Calvert's claim, there are D-Beat bands forming every day that feature similar sounds and advance similar political views.

http://bandcamp.com/tag/d-beat (I would especially recommend two bands that appear on the first page of that link: the Bay Area band, Torso and the Toronto band, S.H.I.T)

Having revisited US hardcore, I can see that I am going to have to revisit UK punk from a similar era. I have caught up with some GBH as well but not enough. A current band that springs to mind as similar are Seven Crowns

Not quite the same but OFF! are fucking amazing.

GBH's City Baby Attacked by Rats is probably one of my top 5 favorite punk records. As with the Discharge reissue CDs, it pays to find the right reissues for GBH's Leather, Bristles, Studs, and Acne; City Baby Attacked by Rats; and City Baby's Revenge. All have bonus tracks of 7" singles released between the records. After City Baby's Revenge, there is a big drop off in quality for GBH.

I really like a lot of the bands linked to the UK82 sub-genre. Here is a site that lists many of those bands: http://www.uk82.com/ Although GBH is not listed, I would certainly put them in that category.

Here's a cool podcast that is produced in Chicago, featuring the music critics for the two main newspapers (Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times). This one features an interview with OFF! as well as the band playing some songs in the studio: http://www.wbez.org/sound-opinions-102237

These bands gigs along with the anarcho punk bands were rammed, but it seems to be something that is never recognised in all the retro programmes about this time.

There's a really good DVD made by our former vocalist on the British anarcho-punk scene here...
