Ashes to Ashes, Stardust to Stardust

The Goldfrapp thing is spot on, Ooh La La is pure Alvin.

He didn't sing on the original Coo Ca Choo, I'd forgotten that. It was Pete notthatone Shelley.

Peter Shelley even performed it as 'Alvin Stardust' on ITV's Lift Off with Ayshea ahead of release. When the record quickly broke the Top 50, all those concerned (including Shelley) agreed they needed a 'face' to become the new Alvin Stardust for TOTP. Enter good-looking Bernard Jewry and the rest, as they say...

(NB This wasn't the first 'blag' of Jewry's career, either. When the original Shane Fenton [Johnny Theakston] died prematurely in 1960, he stepped in to become the hitmaking Shane for a short while thereafter.)

^ That's really quite extraordinary Jah — so he was a substitute pop star, twice over? I had no idea.

It is a weird coincidence, eh? Alvin really was the 'supersub' of 1960s-70s pop music. Like a better-looking David Fairclough. With false sideburns.
