The last day of evidence was yesterday - January 5th - and the days evidence can be read on the Liverpool Echo website. The court has now adjourned until January 25th when the Coroner - Sir John Goldring - will begin his summing up which is expected to take three weeks. Then the jury will retire to consider their verdict.

I didn't find out until recently that the jury were selected on the basis of their professional background and knowledge of certain subjects, so we can at least be assured they have some knowledge of what they are doing.

The Coroner in the Hillsborough Inquest is to begin his summing up today and it is expected to take two weeks.

          BBC link here

An extract from the BBC report:

The coroner at the Hillsborough inquests is due to begin summing up after hearing nearly two years of evidence into the 1989 disaster.

Sir John Goldring has called more than 500 witnesses including survivors, police and medical experts.

Over the next three weeks, he will review evidence on how the 96 Liverpool fans at the FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield died.

The jury is due to retire to consider its verdicts on 22 February.

The inquests, which began on 31 March 2014, are already the longest in English legal history.

The Hillsborough Independent Panel set up in 2009 reviewed 450,000 pages relating to the disaster before publishing its report in September 2012.

The Coroner has said that the jury have 14 questions to answer. They are:

            Question One

On April 15 1989, 96 people died in the disaster as a result of crushing in the central pens of the Leppings Lane terrace, following the admission of a large number of supporters to the stadium through the exit gates.

            Question Two

It asks: “Was there any error or omission in police planning and preparation for the semi-final on April 15, 1989, which caused or contributed to the dangerous situation that developed on the day of the match?”

            Question Three

Question three reads: “Was there any error or omission in policing on the day of the match which caused or contributed to a dangerous situation developing at the Leppings Lane turnstiles?”

            Question Four

“Was there any error or omission by commanding officers which caused or contributed to the crush on the terrace?”

            Question Five

“When the order was given to open the exit gates at the Leppings Lane end of the stadium, was there any error or omission by the commanding officers in the control box which caused or contributed to the crush on the terrace?”

            Question Six

“Are you satisfied so that you are sure that those who died in the disaster were unlawfully killed?”

            Question Seven

Question seven asks about the behaviour of fans.

It says: “Was there any behaviour on the part of the football supporters which caused or contributed to the dangerous situation at the Leppings Lane turnstiles?”

As with other questions, if they answered no they are asked if it may have contributed.

They are then asked: “If your answer to either of the questions above is yes please answer the following question: Was that behaviour unusual or unforseeable?”

            Question Eight

“Were there any features of the design, construction and layout of the stadium which you consider were dangerous or defective and which caused or contributed to the disaster?”

            Question Nine

“Was there any error or omission in the safety certification and oversight of Hillsborough Stadium that caused or contributed to the disaster?”

            Question Ten

“Was there any error or omission by Sheffield Wednesday and its staff in the management of the stadium and/or preparation for the semi-final match on April 15, 1989, which caused or contributed to the dangerous situation that developed on the day of the match?”

            Question Eleven

“Was there any error or omission by Sheffield Wednesday and its staff on April 15, 1989, which caused or contributed to the dangerous situation that developed at the Leppings Lane turnstiles and in the west terrace?”

            Question Twelve

“Should Eastwood and Partners have done more to detect and advise on any unsafe or unsatisfactory features of Hillsborough Stadium which caused or contributed to the disaster?”

            Question Thirteen

“After the crush in the west terrace had begun to develop, was there any error or omission by the police which caused or contributed to the loss of lives in the disaster?”

            Question Fourteen

“After the crush in the west terrace had begun to develop, was there any error or omission by the ambulance service SYMAS which caused or contributed to the loss of lives in the disaster?”

BBC link. Jury to consider if victims 'unlawfully killed'

To find the fans were unlawfully killed and that Mr Duckenfield was responsible, Sir John told the jury they must answer four key questions:

Firstly, that as match commander, he owed a duty of care to the 96 who died.

Secondly, that he was in breach of that duty of care by analysing his conduct before and on the day.

Thirdly, they must be sure his conduct caused or contributed to the deaths "not merely in a minimal way".

Finally, the jury must be sure that, as match commander, Mr Duckenfield's conduct was so bad it amounted to "gross negligence", so bad it was equal to a criminal act or omission.

Given Duckenfield's testimony previously reported here, I'd be extremely surprised if the jury did not find that the Hillsborough victims were unlawfully killed.

“When you’re assessing and judging the conduct of people at the time of the disaster, or in the years previously, you should apply the standards of the time, not the standards of today.”
I found that a curious thing to say. What "standards of the time" differ from now? That football fans could expect to be treated like cattle?

The jury have reached decisions on everything except one topic but that topic has not been disclosed. However, a couple of days ago the jury asked for further clarification on the subject of unlawful killing.

Jury deliberations will continue on Monday.

Q8 Were there any features of the design, construction and layout of the stadium which you consider were dangerous or defective and which caused or contributed to the disaster?

                                              Jury answered YES.

The jury said: “Design and layout of the crush barriers in pen three and four were not fully compliant with the Green Guide.”

They said the lack of dedicated turnstiles meant capacities could not be monitored and there were too few turnstiles. Signage to the side pens was inadequate
