The Wildhearts - 29x the Pain: The Replacements, Husker Du, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Starz, Big Black, Queen, Cheap Trick, The Clash, Jason & The Scorchers, Kiss, Heart, The Damned, Stiff Little Fingers, Blue Oyster Cult, Nirvana, Manic Street Preachers
It's pretty much a list and I have probably missed a few.
And erm Steel Panther in Death To All But Metal named a few - but not in a wholly positive way.
Most obvious ones for me are:
The Undertones - "Perfect Cousin" , having the Human League advising the mother about a synthesiser- and this was before Dare, so almost obscure to a wider audience.
In "All the Young Dudes" Mr 'unter was telling us about his bruv listening to The Beatles and the Stones.
Neil Young in his Rusty stage, telling us a story of the Johnny Rotten, in My, my etc.
PS and speaking of the Human League, one of my favourite bits - in Dreams, Norman Wisdom, Johnny, Joey Dee Dee - good times - altogether now......
"I thought it could've been her in the club on Saturday night. She was a couple of tables away and I thought it might be. But I was far too drunk, so an approach was out of the question. But this guy Stuart had sent us tickets to see his band Belle & Sebastian. We went along thoroughly drunk, stopped for a post-gig "Hello." And I think the girl I was looking for is friends with the girl who plays the cello."
Doesn't 'mentioned' suggest 'in passing, within the lyric' rather than songs specifically 'about' said artist? Or am I just being tiresome and pedantic?
Anyway - T Rex/Marc Bolan receive a mention in all of the following:
All the Young Dudes - Bowie/Mott the Hoople
Kool in the Kaftan - B A Robertson
Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio? - Ramones
You Better You Bet - The Who
Prime Mover - Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction
Brimful of Asha - Cornershop
(Edit: They might also feature in the lyrics of Reunion's fabby Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me), but I can't remember offhand...)
I imagine Elvis and The Beatles receive more mentions in song, but that's not a bad haul.
