    Samples that you did not know (until now)

    Deee-lite: "Groove is in the Heart"

    Herbie Hancock: "Bring Down the Birds" from the Blow-up soundtrack

    One of the most obscure I know of is De La Soul's sampling of YMO's Computer Game/Theme from Invaders on "Big Brother Beat":

    De La:
    YMO:

    and the general rule, if you hear a sample that sounds dope and you aren't sure where it's from... it's The Meters:

    Droppin' Em (LL Cool J):
    Groovy Lady (The Meters):

    (And one genius use that probably everyone knows:
    Rhythm Nation:
    Thank You:
    )

    Absolutely. For years, I only knew "Cissy Strut" but then decided to check out the rest of their stuff and found out that they were all over the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy that I had been listening to.

    I finally located this one a couple of years ago as well

            Harder Than You Think by Public Enemy, I had no idea it heavily sampled Jezahel by Shirley Bassey

              Not a piece of music, but a snatch of dialogue: the line "Let me tell you about my mother" which crops up midway through Aftermath by Tricky.

              I had thought for years that it was from one of Marlon Brando's films (an error caused by me half-remembering the title of his memoir, Songs My Mother Taught Me). Then, re-watching Blade Runner again a while ago, I spotted it. It's what Leon says to Holden just before shooting him while taking the "are you a human or a replicant" test.
