The sun rises in the east - Eastern Fitba

Teams from Yalta, Simferopol and Sevastopol took part in russian cup early round. UEFA does nothing about it.

On the Russian Cup thing, UEFA has announced that it will not recognize an of the results of the Crimean clubs in a Russian competitions.

Just what that means is somewhat opaque, as none of them are expected to challenge for Europe, though I guess it could get interesting if UEFA had an alternative league table without results against those clubs.

In other news, the Donbass Arena was hit by at least two artillery shells. It is going to be a while before Shakthar goes back there.

Just weeks after Andriy Bal and Valyantsin Byalkevich both passed away, another ex-Dynamo Kiev legend has died tragically.

Like Byalkevich, he was a wonderful midfielder in that amazing Kiev side of the late 1990s. I remember being mystified that he didn't join a big rich club in the West.

                RIP.

The return leg is in Lviv, i bet not many basques will be travelling there after tonight's antics.

And yet another Russian/former USSR footballer dies at a tragically young age. Fyodor Cherenkov, who was 55, passed away this morning from a brain tumour.

He was one of the best players in Spartak Moscow's history, and probably the best-loved. He was frequently compared to a slower but more skilful Bryan Robson. More people in the West would have heard of him if he'd played for the USSR in a World Cup or European Championship, but he was considered too inexperienced to bring to Spain in 1982 and was one of the victims of Lobanovskiy's mass cull on the eve of Mexico 86. He did however hang around long enough to play in the Champions League in 1993-94.

Here he is being carried around after Spartak won the Russian title in 1994. Other people in the picture include Yegor Titov, Dmitri Alenichev and Viktor Onopko.

The manager in that picture is Pavel Sadyrin, who a decade later had a very unhappy two-year spell in charge of the newly-formed Russian national team. They qualified for USA 94 without too much trouble in a weak qualifying group (which Yugoslavia had been kicked out of), but then, about two months before the tournament, 14 of the senior players gave the Russian FA an ultimatum that they would not go to America unless Sadyrin was replaced, citing dissatisfaction with his training methods etc etc.

Seven of them recanted a few weeks later (including Karpin, Onopko, Yuran and Mostovoi) and came back in time for the World Cup, but seven others stayed out in the cold: Kanchelskis, Kolyvanov, Dobrovolsky, Kiryakov, Kulkov, Ivanov and Shalimov. All of them would have been in the starting line-up or very close to it. Russia were duly beaten easily by Brazil and Sweden, and putting six goals past Cameroon was too little too late because of some weird results in a couple of the other groups. What a waste of a campaign.

Steaua are currently playing but they are not Steaua. It's a bit confusing, and I can't really explain it (because I dont really understand it), but there's an ongoing court case, and this week the judge ruled that the name and the club are no longer connected (ie one person owns the club - Becali- and get this, the name is now owned by the defence department - because obviously the army "owned" the club in the communist times). Because of this the scoreboard of the game currently going on is "Hosts vs Iasi", the Steaua logo on everyone's shirts has been covered over with tape, and various other interim steps have been taken.

It's all a bit fucking weird and no mistake

Possibly the only time ever that a chant of WHO ARE YER WHO ARE YER WHO ARE YER would have been well advised, and mildly amusing.

The name (and badge and colours - yesterday they turned out in yellow, even though they were at home) are now legally the property of CSA Steaua, which is the original club which still runs loads of other teams (basketball, ice hockey etc). The football team was separated from CSA (and became FC Steaua) in 1998, and that's the deal which has been legally nullified now. The 2 clubs have come together today and come up with some temporary solution which will hopefully keep UEFA happy as regards the club's continued participation in the Europa League this week. But from that point onwards I have no idea.

There is a certain something about a NATO Defence Ministry extorting money from Becali so that he can continue to profit from the legacy of the club whose reputation he has tarnished.

I only hope that they don't use the funds for black torture sites.

Another Bruce Grobbelaar special, that one.

I have a DVD of the return leg of that game (3-2 to Liverpool at Anfield). And despite the perfect picture quality, I've never been able to watch more than 15 minutes of it, because the commentary is masked by howling feedback for pretty much the entire match.
