Shaw Costa Fortuné - Summer transfers 2014

One day after the transfer window and Manchester united start the ball rolling with a £27m bid for 18 year old left back Luke Shaw. That's a big opening bid, maybe with the intention of getting it sorted immediately before other clubs make their moves.
The general consensus seems to be that Diego Costa is on his way to Chelsea at some stage this summer, because, as Jose keeps telling us, they don't have any good strikers.
Not a clue if anyone is interested in signing Marc-Antoine Fortuné from Wigan, but it just helped complete the thread title, and he doesn't stay anywhere long anyway.

I expect the Barcelona firesale to be coming soon, with at least Dani Alves (PSG or Monaco from the rumors), Sanchez (Serie A probably), Fabregas (England somewhere - Manchester United, possibly), Adriano (a starter pretty much at any 2nd tier team), Mascherano (who knows), Cuenca (mid-table La Liga), Tello (Liverpool rumor last summer), and Pedro (no chance of leaving, in my opinion), all likely to be heavily in the rumor mill.

And that's not even counting the Xavi & Puyol to MLS rumors. (Or Valdes, who won't be moving while injured.)

All to be put in the shade if the press keeps trumpeting this supposed Manchester City bid for Messi.

In the reverse direction, David Luiz seems almost certainly headed inbound to Barcelona, along with a rightback (Sagna?) from somewhere to replace Alves.

Isn't the general 'rule' that all the big summer signings come after the World Cup though?

Liverpool have been linked with Mascherano, presumably on the basis that he knows the club, and is a defensive midfielder who doesn't fall over at critical moments.

So its really a question of who is going to have a good world cup then?

If Luke Shaw performs that 27 million could, looking at the state of things, be chicken feed.

From last time around Asamoah Gyan ended up at Sunderland (before deciding, all things being equal, he preferred Al 3in) for 13 million. Suarez signed for Liverpool for 10 million more than that.

I tip Bosnia to perform, and the summer to be about the tussle for Dzeko.

Luke Shaw won't play unless Leighton Baines gets injured/suspecned

If Man City seriously want to sign Messi (and stay anywhere within waving two-fingers-in-the-air from the other side of a dual carriageway distance of Financial Fair Play Rules) they'll be selling half their squad, never mind Dzeko.

Leighton Baines doesn't get injured or suspended. He gets homesick.

Reports that Diego Costa is on his way to Chelsea for 32 million pounds.

Victor Valdes has said adios to his Barcelona teammates, won't be around for the final match of the season (he's going to Germany for further treatment), and is ultimately on his way to Monaco after all.

Atletico must be raging that they set his buyout clause so low, but there was no way of knowing how he'd turn out.

There is also, as yet, no evidence that he is anything more than a one-season wonder. His record before this campaign is unremarkable enough. Maybe he is the real deal, we'll see.

In any event, Chelsea's shithouse quotient has received a boost.

And Jose gets to sign another gestifute player.

He's obviously a very handy player, but he seems to have benefitted from Spanish defences not being all that comfortable dealing with a big powerful targetman. He's pretty much unique in Spain. He won't be quite so unusual in England. He'll still be better than Torres though.

oh i don't know - i can't think of too many players like diego costa in england. who will premier league defenders have faced that will prepare them for playing against him? andy carroll? ricky lambert?

There is also, as yet, no evidence that he is anything more than a one-season wonder.
i'd say he'll score at least 20 goals if he stays fit.

He's 6'2". It's not like he's the size of Jan Koller.

20 goals, or 20 league goals?

Oh more than that two. Lukaku, anichebe, Adebayor, holt, benteke, kozak, wickham, fletcher, altidore, dzeko even long and Walters.... Strong aggressive biggish forwards who like a header and a bit of a struggle and like to dish it out.

Costa is obviously a lot more skilful than many of these, and certainly seems more versatile, and will probably do quite well, but there aren't many teams in la liga who like to play it direct to a powerful target man. He's well suited to the premiership but he's not going to be unique any more.

the only one of those players who's actually got a diego costa-type skill set, though, is adebayor, and most of the time he can't be arsed. diego costa is a better player than any of those guys. i mean, you're talking about walters? kozak? altidore? are you serious?

SAW - i'd say 20 goals overall, more if he took penalties. 20 goals would probably put him in the top 10 scorers in english football, which wouldn't be bad for a guy in his first season.

Well, Drogba aside, Chelsea's record with big-ticket striker signings hasn't been very good in the last few years, and I always have reservations about players who just suddenly start turning it on in their mid-20s, because as likely as not they seem to dry up again soon afterwards. Call it Arshavin Syndrome.

Wouldn't say Costa was better than Lukaku on the evidence of this season either. But who knows, he may end up getting 30, let alone 20.

It was more likely to have been his late 20s . . .

Drogba's age is accurate because he moved to France as a three year old. and the reason he was a late developer is because he started out as a defender.

Garcia, put simply, he's a rounded player but let's see if he retains his huge physical advantage when he leaves the home of the 5'10" centre half and moves to a League where big strong forwards aren't unusual.
