Sean Gallagher is now officially on the ballot paper, after winning the backing of four county councils (Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Wexford). Gavan Duffy has two (Carlow, Meath), as has Joan Freeman (Cork City, Galway).

Freeman and Duffy both up to three now (Fingal and Wicklow respectively).

Freeman has won a nomination, as should Duffy next Monday. Increasingly amused by the growing tinhattery of Gemma O'Doherty at council meetings, not to mention the reaction of her supporters on The Journal:

Michael D is polling a remarkable 67% in the first survey of the campaign, with Gallagher on a distant 16% and the SF contender at 7%.

Liadh Ní Ríada is already promising/threatening to bring up Brexit and a united Ireland in the presidential debates - it's going to be a long six weeks ...

There probably aren't going to be any presidential debates. Michael D doesn't seem to be remotely interested in taking part, because the President isn't allowed to really say fuck all about anything.

Alas, Kevin Sharkey has withdrawn from the race.

So, the Public Accounts Committee examined the presidential accounts yesterday, and found €317,000 in unvouched expenses that had been granted since 1938. Meanwhile, Michael D launched his campaign today:

Peter Casey releases a video of himself firing a golf ball into Lough Foyle - which quickly snowballs into an environmental backlash:

"What in the name of Padre Pio's glove do you think you are at?"

"That's a weird hurley. Anyway, not to worry - you've more chance of being the next Rose than the next President."

"So peter, do you have an opinion on #singleuseplastic and the environment?"

that first one nearly made me piss myself. His follow up tweet is no better and the first two responses are just mean.

Victory for the Real Capital, as Cork, Limerick and Waterford will vote next year on whether to introduce directly elected Mayors, but Dublin won't, for now at least.

Meanwhile, the Nordies' vote on whether to rename looks likely to be invalidated as too few electors could be arsed.

(Macedonia of course, although there was a lighthouse of that name in Belfast Lough. Gives its name to Rathcoole electoral ward)

The Minister for Communication, Denis Naughten, has resigned over private dinners he had with an interested party to the National Broadband Plan:

It's difficult to believe but Denis Naughten may be too dim to be part of a cabinet that contains Simon Coveney and Shane Ross

If the backstop deal is immediately rejected by the DUP/Commons would Leo still go to the polls?

Would also mean starting Abortion legislation from scratch, no social welfare or finance bill in place to implement the budget.

No, he'd only go before Christmas if Brexit is signed off on, but with FF getting antsy, a GE would still be probable in the first half of 2019.

The South's imminent poll should be good. They're picking one of three Dragon's Denizens to be the next Pres (assuming that Higgins wins this time but that if he dies or steps down in office they'll give it to the runner up to save money and Berba's blood pressure)
