The Minister for Justice resigns for little reason, other than:

Mishandling the bugging of the Garda Ombudsman
Controversy over his attitude to Garda whistleblowers
Claims of political bias in relation to a penalty points controversy
Breaking data protection laws over same ...

    And so on.

I wonder what caused Labour to finally stop supporting him.

It was the local elections. This wS inevitable a very long time ago. I can't believe it took so long. I don't understand why they didn't make him go when all of this started. All he's been doing for months is damage

His downfall is due to his double standards and his abuse of the information at his office

Unfortunately the social reform legislation that he was guiding through will probably stall. He was technically competent but utterly blinkered and arrogant.

The Irish justice system needs a major overhaul that was partly being initiated under pressure from the Troika. Court case costs remain ridiculously high to the point that only the very rich or very poor with nothing to lose can afford to use the 'justice' system.

e.g. the recent right of way case in Sligo involved a technical argument over public access and cost EUR 9m. Insane.

Ireland is heading for an Italy style justice system that is glacier like in speed and efficiency.

Young whippersnapper Charlie Flanagan has been promoted to Cabinet - he's only been a TD since 1987, replacing his father, Oliver J who had been in situ since 1947.

None of that would provoke a resignation here, provided the Tories' press allies didn't bang on about it.

The leader of the Conservative and Unionist party has said he won't resign if the union is smashed up.

I've a vague memory of Shatter's first election way back in 1981. He was one of the three Jewish TDs (from about 2,000 Jews in the country at the time) when there was only one Protestant.

Ivan Yates and Godfrey Timmons were both the one Protestant td in 1981.

There are usually a handful of Protestant tds depending on the fortunes of the Fine Gael party.

Off the top of my head I can think of four dockerells, Shane Ross, Maurice manning, Johnny and Mildred fox heather humphries, erskine Childers (our second Protestant head of state) Martin manseragh, Trevor Sargent, and probably a good few more that I don't know about.

Why? Oliver j was renowned to be the biggest creeping Jesus in Ireland in the middle of the last century, back when it was a prize worth winning. His son is nothing of the sort.

I don't care, he didn't get elected for being competent. Like half the Dail, he first got in through a by-election to replace his dead-father.

But people don't have to vote for him. Irish political dynasties are different to other countries because of multiseat constituencies. If you don't want to vote for someone, you can vote for their party rival. Irish politics is full of failed political dynasties.

There must be something in the water in Ireland, because I don't seem to be able to follow the logic of most people in Ireland.

There are droughts in the desert in the US. Google random facts to fill up rest of article. Therefore Irish people should pay for their water.

Right... how can I get a column in the Irish Times? It seems anybody can.

True, but if he had any notable talent, he'd have made a ripple during the Rainbow, rather than rising without trace at the present moment. Updated the title to keep it as an all-purpose Irish thread, similar to the Canadian one, and in the wake of the VB debate last night, here's the first of the Euro previews:

                                                Midlands North-West:

The old Connacht-Ulster constituency has been made even more gargantuan by the addition of seven North Leinster counties. Eight realistic contenders are chasing the four seats here, two for FF and FG, one for Labour and SF, and two independents. Máiread McGuinness should win a FG seat here, similarly Sinn Féin's strength in Border areas should secure their berth. Realistically, Labour's Lorraine Higgins will struggle to reach double digits, so the real battle is between Pat "the Cope" Gallagher, Thomas Byrne, Jim Higgins, Marian Harkin and Ming Flanagan. On current polls, at least one independent (probably Harkin) will be returned, and while FF are traditionally strong here, Ming's community activism could see Martin pushed over the cliff.

                                                Verdict: FF 1, FG 1, SF 1, Ind 1.
