    Yassir, was he poisoned?

Looking increasingly likely that he was.

The first forensic tests on remains from the exhumed corpse of Yasser Arafat have shown unexpectedly high levels of radioactive polonium-210, suggesting the Palestinian leader could have been poisoned with the rare and lethal substance.

The Swiss scientists who tested Arafat's remains after the exhumation of his body in November discovered levels of polonium at least 18 times higher than the norm in Arafat's ribs, pelvis and in soil that absorbed his leaked bodily fluids.
Though it is worth noting that the Swiss researchers are currently claiming only "moderate" support for the theory.

What would've been the point of poisoning an ageing and terminally ill man?

      Yassir, was he poisoned?

Was it conclusively determined that he was terminally ill?

I recall AIDS rumours, but not anything more than that.

I thought that he was being treated for cancer. I don't always remember things correctly, though...

Poisoning with radioactive material could have precipitated his illness.

You mean there were people who thought he hadn't been? I must be even more cynical than I thought.

                    Salisbury stakeout?

One of the two people critically ill in hospital in Salisbury after “suspected exposure to an unknown substance” is a Russian man who was exchanged in a high-profile “spy swap” in 2010, the Guardian understands.

Well best of Luck to The UK as it sets sail on the seas of International trade. America is run by an unstable lunatic, who starts trade wars with all his closest and most vital allies and is teetering on the brink of open fascism, China has gone Full bore totalitarian, and insists that all trade disputes be handled by chinese courts. India is run by someone that it really doesn't bear thinking about, and now Russia might be murdering spies on the streets of the UK again. What a great timing the brexiteers.

Well, they wanted to recreate the Dunkirk spirit - presumably by placing the nation into an impossible position leading inevitably to a humiliation. A last-ditch retreat may be in order.

The Maltings shopping experience tends to do that to you, anyway. Odstock (Salisbury) should be better equipped than most hospitals to deal with this sort of thing since Porton Down's nearby.

The BBC could have worded this breaking news better:

"UK will respond "robustly" to any evidence of Russian involvement in collapse of former spy, Boris Johnson says"

                                ?

I'm sure Russia is quaking after our robust response to the Litvinenko murder.

Boris is making veiled threats to pull "the British presence" out of the World Cup.

Apparently the two Russians have been poisoned and are in a grave condition, in Salisbury hospital. Does this not seem a little odd? If their condition was so critical why the fuck are they still in Salisbury?

A specialist unit or a large hospital not some glorified cottage hospital. They can't be that ill if they are still there.

That's the point I was making earlier. Odstock (Salisbury) hospital has a number of specialist units, mainly "thanks" to the nearby presence of Porton Down. They definitely ain't in some glorified cottage hospital (though that's precisely what the original Odstock was).

Now I'm wondering to myself how much of a coincidence it is that these two Russians were living in the Salisbury area, given Putin's propensity for pursuing people he considers traitorous. Maybe that's a step too far, though.

The daughter was visiting but he was living there according to the news. Channel Four News also said that countries leave retired spies alone, if they've stopped working. A gentleman's agreement or honour amongst thieves. This would suggest he was working again and as he'd moved to Salisbury that's adding to what's being implied.

The implications of what I've read is that this is more of a message to others that MI5 / CIA can't protect you.
