Not sure where to post this but Deniz Naki has survived an apparent assassination attempt.

Yugoslav agents once shot a Croatian dissident in the same street as my piano teacher in the late 80s. Got shot in the chest and mouth, but survived. Whole thing seemed unbelievably sloppy when the details of the shooting emerged. This doesn’t look like the Turks put their Top Men on this one either.

I would doubt this is the work of MIT and is more likely to be some ultra nationalists taking advantage of an opportunity. Naki is a high profile target for sure.

The kind of thing that Spoony notes used to happen all too often in emigre Yugoslav communities in the US, Canada and Australia. Freelancers were much more involved than state agents.

There was definitely a sense at the time that the emigres were carrying on ethnic feuds that the home country had put behind them under Tito, but that proved tragically optimistic

Not as serious as most of the stuff in this thread, but it looks like a lot of Turks are going to lose a lot of money.

Turkish attack on US-backed Kurds in Syria believed imminent

                  https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...y_to_clipboard

An unsurprising but deeply worrying development.

The US and Israel are trying to carve out a Kurdish-dominated client state north of the Euphrates and across northern Syria, a geostrategic area rich in oil and water resources. They've already set up around a dozen US and Israeli military bases, complete with air strips, divided among themselves the oil rights, carpet-bombed and ethnically cleansed the main cities under the guise of fighting ISIS. All of this covered up with the "Rojava" bullshit progressive propaganda, which many western liberals have bought wholesale.

It won't work, but it will add significantly to the body count and destruction in Syria.

Is Russia going to allow Turkey in? Presently Russia is trying to retake Idlib from Turkey backed groups.

I know of the existence of many US bases in Syria but have never heard of Israel having any, do you have any sources for this Linus?

The Kurds in Syria are an extension of the PKK which is recognised by the EU and the USA, amongst others, as being a terrorist organisation. I understand that they fought against Daesh etc but this was the first mainstream article to recognise this.

USA and the West said no to this but it appears that Russia has said yes, at least you part of it. The USA have said Afrin isn't in their zone.

Really enjoyed the dramatisation of the Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak.

Rare to get a Turkish novels on the BBC. I heard her talking about it on Front Row which persuaded me to listen. The novel was read out in court - the book deals with an Armenian-American who comes to Turkey to find out what happened to her family in the genocide- a topic it's illegal to discuss in Turkey.

Turkey’s attack on Syrian Kurds could overturn the entire region

An interesting piece I thought with some discussion points opened.

This isn't going to end well. We have US and Israeli proxies fighting Turkish proxies in Afrin with the possibility that Russian and Iranian proxies are about to enter the fight.

This comes a week after the U.S. killed scores of Russian mercenaries and Iran brought down an Israeli fighter jet as Turkey attacked the Kurds and suffered heavy losses.

Unfortunately for the last few years Fisk seems to have reached the point in his career where he can demand that his pieces aren't edited, and hence many of them don't really make sense

Afrin encircled with 350,000 civilians trapped inside. Do we hear the same voices that called for intervention against Russia? Of course not.

This has the potential to be a massacre but nothing in the west about this.

Turkey has apparently taken Afrin. Will they stop there or move onto other Kurdish areas?

Russia has been quiet on this in the same way that Turkey has been silent on Eastern Ghouta.
