    A Well Regulated Militia . . .

This is going straight into my "How To Lie With Statistics" lecture series which I have just made up but will happen one day.

Shot for charging at somebody with a pen. And they knew he was otherwise unarmed. Surely the police officer has to go down for this?

US Marshal. (But still employed within the greater definition of a "law enforcement officer")

                And yes. You'd hope so.

(Tried under Federal Law, rather than state law, as he is a federal employee in a federal building, where, presumably, a federal prosecution was underway?)

I'm afraid that you have no sense of the mentality that leads to our having armed marshals in the courtroom in the first place.

The marshal hasn't even been suspended, let alone charged, and the vast majority of reactions have been positive. Here's the senior FBI official at the trial

"I think the marshals did an exceptional job. They stopped the threat to the witness," Dressen said.
It really is a different world over here, especially in places like Utah.

What are you guys suggesting the Marshal did wrong? A defendant in a gang violence case lunged at a witness with what could easily have been a deadly object. Should the Marshal have yelled 'freeze' loudly?

                      Could have tased him.

Would have been marginally less likely to kill the dude.

I'm not saying the Utah courtroom shooting was justifiable, but shooting a known violent criminal who has jumped out of a dock in an attempt to inflict violence on a testifying witness with a sharp object is somewhat less far down the scale of revulsion for me than this tragic story of Montana's "castle doctrine" in operation.

They left a garage door open, left a purse visible as bait, and then shot to kill without warning. Could they have made it any more obvious that they were eager to kill somebody for an act of petty burglary? Twisted fucks.

Edit: at least in that case the guy is actually being charged with deliberate murder, which is some evidence of at least minimal sanity on the part of the authorities.

Mr Kaarma, a 29-year-old firefighter, has told investigators his home had twice been hit by burglars, and he told a hair stylist he had waited up at night to shoot intruders, prosecutors said.

On the night of the shooting, Mr Kaarma and his partner Janelle Pflager left their garage door open, and Ms Pflager left her purse in the garage in order to bait intruders, she told police.

They set up motion sensors and a video monitor, prosecutors said.

When the sensors went off just after midnight and they saw a man on the monitor screen, Mr Kaarma went outside and fired a shotgun into the garage without warning several times.

                                  Appalling.

What happened to Longdon in Indianapolis is part of a disturbing pattern. Ever since the Sandy Hook massacre, a small but vocal faction of the gun rights movement has been targeting women who speak up on the issue—whether to propose tighter regulations, educate about the dangers to children, or simply to sell guns with innovative security features. The vicious and often sexually degrading attacks have evolved far beyond online trolling, culminating in severe bullying, harassment, invasion of privacy, and physical aggression. Though vitriol flows from both sides in the gun debate, these menacing tactics have begun to alarm even some entrenched pro-gun conservatives.

How many dead is there going to have to be before common sense prevails? This would never have happened if every single victim was armed themselves. Every single innocent non-armed person that dies is another victim of Obama's refusal to liberalise the gun laws.

The gunman was the son of a second-unit director on the Hunger Games films, leading The Mail On Sunday's front page to do a 'Gunman Son Of Director Of Violent Films' headline. Where there is tragedy, trust a newspaper to turn it all into a pile of steaming shit.

Shooting in Las Vegas yesterday from people who were a part of the Cliven Bundy protests.

Now I'm watching a guy who was in a high speed chase in LA standing up on someone's roof in a residential neighborhood, and he's casually holding an assault rifle. He climbed up there after running out of his car, you could see people out on the sidewalks running away in fear as he approached them.
