    A Well Regulated Militia . . .

American gun nuts don't like America much, either.

(The real one, I mean. They love the America in their heads.)

The entire Los Angeles Unified School District (which serves more than 650,000 students) has been shut because of "credible threats" sent by email to two school board members.

I can't believe what kind of havoc it must be causing, given the general paucity of decent child care.

That was my first thought, all the traffic and chaos caused by the scramble to go get kids.

              Not really. No.

The IRA sometimes rang through bomb warnings didn't they?

                  Yes they did.

I'm struggling to think of US examples, though I think that the Weathermen may have done so back in the day.

It was a thing that kids did to try to avoid exams when I was in high school.

The idea being to draw law enforcement to the area and therefore kill them. Bombs were often timed to explode earlier than the warning indicated, for the same reason.

I look at bomb calls the same way I do when they report "so and so has received death threats". Nobody who phones in death threats intends to follow through, and nobody who really plans to kill you is going to give you a warning.

                        From the AP:

BREAKING: NYC officials say they received same threat that closed LA schools, concluded it was a hoax.

I wonder who decides what's a credible threat, and how they do so.

Not true. Not the Islamic groups, but IRA and ETA usually gave warnings.

Ugh, stressful morning. My oldest goes to school at a Santa Monica school, so not part of LAUSD. But you have the thoughts of "well, if there was a threat against LA schools, then would someone decide not to target a school because it's in a different district?"

I normally don't drop her off, but I happened to this morning because I was going to an event in her classroom. The principal was out front talking to parents and assuring them that our district received no threat.

They had a drill for taking cover during shooting/other safety situations last week.

Yeah, it's the fact that my children have had to do mass shooting drills at school more than anything that makes me think I should get out of this country.

Some more details about today's "threat"

Though neither email has been made public, it appears both school systems received similar—if not identical—emails, threatening a multi-pronged, jihadi attack on multiple schools, using bombs and nerve gas. But there were plenty of details to indicate the threat was a hoax. Among them:

Both emails were sent by Cockmail—an email host affiliated with the gutter image board 8chan that boasts decidedly non-halal domains like “nigge.rs,” “horsefucker.org,” and “goat.si,” as well as multiple variations on the phrase, “dicksinmyan.us.” (The NYPD has since subpoenaed “Cock.li Email Hosting,” and California state Rep. Brad Sherman confirms the LA email came from a “pornographic” address.)

Both emails spelled the word “Allah” with a lowercase “a”

The author of the Los Angeles email, at least, claimed to be a victim of bullying.

“There was nothing credible about the threat. It was so outlandish,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference Tuesday.

Though it's worth pointing out that some mass shootings were committed by users of 4chan/8chan/other online sewers.

I would guess that, to a trained cop, bogus threats are as obvious as the Nigerian 419 scam letters are to us.

Interesting piece on the economic impact on the gun industry of mass shootings, on peoplesworld.org:

"...At a global conference for retailers hosted by Goldman Sachs in September of last year, the CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods, Ed Stack, announced that, 'The gun business was very much accelerated based on what happened after the [2012] election and then the tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook.'

"A year earlier, James Debney, the chief executive of Smith & Wesson told an investor's meeting that 'the tragedy in Newtown and the legislative landscape" had driven sales up significantly.' He commented that 'fear and uncertainty that there might be increased gun control drove many people to buy firearms for the first time. You can see after a tragedy, there's also a lot of buying.'

"But Tommy Milner, the head of Cabela's, one of the leading gun retailers, was even more blunt about the political ramifications involved. Before a group of investors in Nebraska, he recently stated that his company made a 'conscious decision' to stock up on more guns and ammunition before the 2012 election. Cabela's bet that Obama's re-election would drive sales. The gamble paid off."

I just read this on The New Yorker and thought of this thread.

                                              December 5, 1791
                                              James Madison
                                              House of Representatives

                                              Dear James,

How is it almost 1792?! Quick question on the right to bear arms thing in your “Bill of Rights”—the wording and punctuation are slightly confusing. Did you mean that the right of the people serving in the militia to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, or people in general? I’m assuming the former, but don’t want to make an ass of you and me! (Franklin made that up, but I’m using it everywhere!) Could you please send me a quick note whenever to clarify?
