Something for visitors to Florida to keep in mind.
Still, the Gualtieri told reporters, the legal question is not about whether Drejka was right in being the self-appointed protector of the handicap spot.
“What’s relevant is not whether this guy’s a good guy, nice guy, or whether he’s a jerk, or whether he’s a thorn in people’s side and what he’s done, whether it’s three weeks ago, three months ago or three years ago,” Gualtieri said. “What’s relevant and the only thing we can look at here is was he in fear of further bodily harm.”
Floridians have always had the right to defend themselves, but the state’s “stand your ground” law says people who believe someone is trying to kill or seriously harm them don’t have an obligation to retreat before using deadly force. The law was spotlighted following the 2012 slaying of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin when jurors discussed the statute in their deliberations before deciding to find George Zimmerman not guilty.
In the past, defense attorneys had to explain why their clients deserved immunity in a killing. Now prosecutors have to prove that people who claim they were standing their ground are wrong.
Last year, lawmakers shifted the burden of proof from defense attorneys to prosecutors. It has made the law no less controversial.
“Does this law create a situation potentially where people shoot first and ask questions later?” Gualtieri asked. “You can have that discussion. You can have that debate. I don’t make the law. We enforce the law. And I’m going to enforce it the way it’s written, the way the legislature intended for it to be applied, and others can have the debate about whether they like it or not.”

Don't know if anyone else has been following this. Some radical nut in Texas wants to publish on line instructions on how to make a gun using a 3D printer. Insane! These would made of plastic and practically undetectable. No serial numbers so untraceable.
He is arguing that his 1st Amendment rights allow him to publish this. A couple of state courts have put a blocker on it but the info has been out there for a while.
Pictures of these things shown that they look just like water pistols so any kid getting hold of one may think it is a toy a kill someone.
A saving grace may be that as these things are made of plastic they are likely to blow up in the face of anyone using them, I suppose. Also, and I don't know much about 3D printing, I guess the printers are very expensive and out of the reach of most crackers but I can see some outfit getting one and making the guns to order.
Disturbing. Even El Trumpo seems opposed to it though the NRA seems to be in favor.

Disgruntled employee with access to gun seems to be almost a daily event now. There have been two in the last 24 hours (Middleton, WI as well as Aberdeen) and the narrative in both cases is close friends or neighbours saying something like "something must have snapped."

Aberdeen shooter was a woman (very untypically) but I doubt we'll hear any mitigation (except from close friends) given she's black and dead. OTOH a shooter in Pennsylvania was a 62 year old white guy accused of choking his wife. I imagine it is getting far less airtime:

That Harford sentence above has an interesting racial angle: "Attorneys in both states chose to try him in Delaware first because the state’s sentencing laws are stricter." The 40 years sentence is only for a shooting he did in Delaware (attempted manslaughter), not the fatal Harford shootings. Contrast with white cops being moved to stand trial in places they get an easier ride.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 21-09-2018, 00:52.
