Compared to BBC News 24, most of the talking heads are pretty good. They lull you into a false sense of security before one of the loons comes on. I'm at least forewarned about some of them now.
The reason I ask, is that I claim to be 'au fait' with Nevada politics, more than a normal Nevadan. Because, I wake up at 10pm, read the local rags online, have a look at the grauniad, then 4 minutes later, throw on Trevor Noah.
I know maybe... 100 people, on a regular, face-to-face basis. Not one of them watches cable news. Not one.
*I just counted the people who know my (sur) name here... aside from colleagues, I can think of 40. That's scary. I never tell anyone my surname.

This is both an example of why TV-as-we-know-it is dying and deserves to die, and also why gridiron remains such an incredibly valuable media property.

Mr HP is ... the guy who makes me go "did I really think that?" and then "yeah, fucking right I did". Because he sees the things that the ursus collective sees objectively. He sees them emotionally.
Or, you know, those fucking Russians that I spent the whole of my childhood learning their alphabet and grammar, and watching the "De Svedanya neta, de svedanya" on TV (Russian: Language and people, on the BBC... look it up! I had a Lithuanian teacher in primary, and a goddamn 'Latvian' in secondary, who hid uner the cover of (he's dead) Mr Przybelawak' in secondary. He was good with the right hand at belt. We used to worry about whether or not we could smell him... when he used his left hand for the biff, he was literally, unhinged. Willaim Markey, how are you, now?))))
WOW. Memories.

I had a pretty nice TV, but then it stopped working with Apple TV and concluded, with much effort, that the new Apple TV software just wouldn't work with this six year old TV. So - perhaps in a moment of irrational frustration - I gave the TV away to a friend who didn't have HD. At the time, I planned to buy a better one, but then discovered that I didn't really miss it. If I really need to see a game or something, I go to a friend's house and bring food as compensation or to a bar.
I watch Netflix et al on my fire. I'm thinking of getting a thing that will project video from my iPhone onto a screen. I can probably pick-up projector screen at University salvage for cheap.

It's not just about me, to be clear, but the number of people adopting my approach is increasing.

US military vets are quitting the NRA: "in order to teach, now you have to be a soldier? That’s insane,” Could be nothing, a straw in the wind, or substantial change. But when combat veterans start opposing the NRA, you'd figure the latter have the beginnings of a credibility problem among their supporters.

Rubio's reply here at least suggests that he wants to be the dog that wags the tail when he votes on these issues, and won't just parrot the NRA platform. But his bland "second amendment" answer as to why he needs to accept NRA money is clearly evasive bollocks. You can be "2nd amendment rights" without accepting gun money. The real answer is he fears that the NRA scum will abstain from voting if they don't have a compliant horse in the race.
I would like to think that the GOP has lost Florida for a generation (Trump + the backlash from this shooting) but it is too soon to say. Florida swings with the wind, but there are built-in GOP advantages such as felon disfranchisement.
OTOH, anecdotally, I have numerous 19 year old students whose parents will get citizenship when the kids turn 21. Unless the GOP has some nasty policy up its sleeve for those people, it's a ticking demographic bomb that will fuck them in Florida, and maybe Texas, Georgia and Arizona.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 23-02-2018, 01:44.

Courtesy of the responses to something ursus just retweeted, I am now reading a conversation involving a gentleman who says the age at which people can own guns shouldn't be raised to 21 because it would outlaw '60% of our military.' I wish someone would point out to him that there are many countries around the world where private citizens either actually or effectively aren't allowed to own guns, but those countries still have armies. But I can't be arsed wading in myself.

It turns out there was a police officer at the school, actually posted there iirc, he got to the building at 90 seconds but then didn't go in and waited outside. He was initially suspended and has now resigned.
Armed guard at Florida high school failed to enter building and stop shooter

There's also a tweet from the manchild as well, words fail me.Last edited by Antepli Ejderha; 23-02-2018, 06:16.

Yeah, if you don't do the job you're employed to do, you can expect some sort of rap on the knuckles even if your lack of attention doesn't result in seventeen schoolkids getting murdered. Seems a bit of an odd thing to be annoyed about, compared with the rest of it.

I’m hearing more and more people say the level of violence on video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts.
