Songs that you rediscovered in 2013-2020

I was sneering at the cheesiness of the intro as I didn't recognise the song from its title, and then when she started singing, I realised I knew every word. In that video she's mesmerising.

Songs that you rediscovered in 2013-2020

Listening to Mark Radcliffe's programme last week I discovered "Where Will I Be" from the 1995 album "Wrecking Ball" by Emmylou Harris. I've listened to it several times since. Can't find it for download anywhere, so will be on the look out for a CD copy.

Tell it to my heart - Taylor Dane. It's not that old but I'd completely forgotten how brilliant it is.

Does singing Swinging On a Star (Bing Crosby version) every night to your daughter for over a year count as a rediscovery?

Oh, and BBC4 are currently playing In The Navy by The Village People! Superb.

Youtube recommended a song from my Canadian-radio-listening days that I had completely forgotten about: "Romantique avec toi" by Alain Delorme.

I might be able to put together a nice little playlist of songs from back then, punctuated by radio airchecks (station IDs) that are also up on Youtube.

Released just at the end of 2012, so not a rediscovery, Marcus Eads' Historic Grain Elevators is a super-lofi collection of solo country-ish guitar tunes recorded direct to cassette and in some instances on a karaoke machine. It's here.

Is it the only good song to include a sax solo? To be debated another day, perhaps, but Martha & The Muffins' Echo Beach is here.

I think we did - or I'm imagining we did - a thread on 'new wave songs with inappropriate saxxing'. The early '80s were rife with them, for some reason.

Huh? You'd have to rule out an awful lot of early RnR, plus most Spector pop. That's before we even get to mid 70s Springsteen.

Can't stand that stuff, so more than happy to rule it out as a job lot.

OK, but early Rock and Roll was built around the saxophone, as much or more than the guitar. So, like it or not, unless you believe there are no "good songs" among them, there's not much to debate.

Evidence for the defence, especially from about 2:14 on

One of those songs which, like say Echo Beach by Martha & The Muffins, would be improved without the unpleasant sound of the saxophone.

Yes, I get that you don't like the saxophone. But that's not the same as debating it's place in popular music, which was your suggestion.

Thanks for this. Great silly little storytelling. Right up my street. Payoff goes on a little too long, but it's a good'un.

I had a listen to Mr Big's Romeo from 1977 for the first time in decades tonight and had never realised what a fine song it is.

There's this annoyingly common practice where old 70s and 80s songs are 'updated' fpr contemporary tastes. There's a 2011 version of this and it's awful.

Good call Inca - I was listening to this driving in tonight, inspired by Stuart Maconie's recent interview with Tom Doyle about his book Man On The Run.

A heady 1980s blend of synths and socialism, Fiat Lux's Blue Emotion stormed the ramparts of the pop charts to reach number 59. It's here.

A sensational vocal melody from the Billy Bragg of the south west and one-time Blue Aeroplane Rodney Allen, here.

I enjoyed both of those, Furtho, even if I expected Rodney Allen to break out into Levi Stubb's Tears at any moment. The sax at the end of the Fiat Lux was a particularly lovely touch.

Neither of which link neatly to this

Ooh, thanks for that; me and my flatmate at the time were in 'love' with Rodney, his plaintive tones used to make me want to hug him, be him and be in a band with him all at the same time...
