    Sport Mastermind

Not sure if this should be here or in Sport, but the contestants tonight are being asked questions on

The life and times of Sir Matt Busby
    The marathon
The history of the Ryder Cup
    and

... the history of Israeli Tennis.

    Cracking!

Can they write twenty questions on the history of Israeli tennis?

I mean obviously they can - "who was Israel's ladies' singles champion in 1967" - but it's hardly going to be compelling viewing for the audience, is it?

That's always the same with Mastermind though isn't it? Have to admit though, the Israeli tennis round was the only one where I didn't manage to answer a single question!

The guy who chose the Ryder Cup blew up proving he knew fuck all about sport except for the Ryder Cup - went from first to last and had six passes in his sporting GK round!

It didn't help that Des Lynam kept slurring his words.

Just caught a bit of this. It makes one yearn for Magnusson. Lynam sounded rushed and monotone, whereby the afore-mentioned original was swift, yet warmly relaxed. And clear.

I watched last night's with the teletext subtitles on. Well, I did for as long as I could stand. In ten minutes or so, I noticed the following in the subtitles:

            "Gary Burtalls" (Gary Birtles)
"philly" (for a young female horse)
            "verve clico" (Veuve Clicquot)
            and "Brazilian flare"

As a former subtitler, this kind of unresearched, lazy and downright stupid effort does my head in. Quality control was something that was just starting to be compromised as I was leaving the profession, and it seems to have been totally abandoned now. Lyra, any thoughts?

Still, that guy knew his Brazilian football, didn't he?

I think most subtitling is done automatically by computer nowadays so plenty of typos slip through the net.

Steve Day, a deaf comedian, does a bit of material about watching the news and Anne Widdicombe, he latter worked out, said during the course of an interview "let me give you an analogy" however what came up in the subtitles was "let me give you anal joy".

(Of course him being a comedian this may not have actually happened, although I really, really hope it did)

I think for pre-recorded stuff like Mastermind, it's still mainly done by real people. Live or late-edit programmes tend to be done by a stenographer or a subtitler using speech-recognition software, but I'm not aware of any programmes routinely done completely automatically. I've been out of it for a few years, though, so maybe they do that now.

As for embarrassing errors, I used to subtitle cricket on C4 using speech recognition and remember the day NZ player Geoff Allot was transmitted as "the phallus".

I don't remember him. Bit of a dick, was he?

Nearly the same thing happened last night with the guy that answered questions about Brazil in the World Cup.

I's choose The European Cup/Champions League as my specialist subject.
