Feeling a weird, non-specific sense of ennui.

Condolences to GO and Foxy. As noted, not the best way to kick off 2018.

Shit. Condolences to GO and Foxy. Although these definitely don't seem mundane.

That's a shit start to the New Year Foxy and GO. My condolences.

Mrs.AE found out that one of her students lost his brother on Christmas Day, he'd already lost his mum and dad in 2017 and had a stroke. What do you say to him?

Yep, sorry to hear that. I’ve soap opera level extended family business badness going on (yet again another bit of family bad news no one wanted to tell me “over the phone”, P&M will be living in a puddle Post horrorshow brexit/ill advised blockchain investments should Dad lose his natural defence of laziness, but they’ll be texting pictures of food they’ve “just had” in Dubrovnik cause they don’t want to worry me over the phone) that I don’t really want to go into here, but nothing as punch in the face by reality as that.

My boss's dad died right before Christmas, as did the dad of my boss's boss. Sad.

Let's have a drink. [gauge reaction. if reaction is not "hell yes right now please", add] whenever you feel like it.

My condolences to GO and mrfox.

Today felt like a very long work day. As in, three days rolled into one. It wasn't a difficult day, just extremely busy. Now I have to think about taking Teddy out for a walk. Our walks are not very long these days. I'm not looking forward to the rest of the week, weather-wise.

    From me, too x

On the mundane, I am very pleased with my Perversion Mascara, and the boots and scarf that I bought in the sale last week.

I've had some news that isn't that good but nothing that involves anyone dying or being really ill, so I should woman up, knuckle down and get on with it.

Condolences from me too Tim & Mr Fox.

An hour ago I was told I was Richard Branson's double for the third time in the past couple of years. "You're even English too!" said the checkout guy today, like it was some kind of added bonus. "He's a billionaire but a really good guy, right?" "Ummm... not really," I mumbled. Fortunately the line-up behind me were even less interested in our incipient discussion on the merits, or otherwise, of Sir Dick than me. So I scuttled away to put my head in a bucket. Why do people do this? I don't want to look like anyone but myself. Why do others think it's some sort of virtue to look like somebody famous?

  16. #24741
I get compared to a range of people and it is tiresome, yes. People seem to think they're clever for spotting the resemblance, not considering that the person they're talking about is a human being with feelings and might not want to be compared to someone. I don't know if it's worse than any other comments on one's appearance, but people seem to think that it's acceptable to say you look like, say, Theresa May, when they wouldn't dare say "hey lady, you look all awkward, haggard and stooped!". I know people whose lives have been blighted (no exaggeration) by constantly being told they look like <unattractive famous person>.

I went for a cocktail after work, which turned into two cocktails, a glass of wine and a spliff. No-one said I looked like anyone famous. Pleasantly buzzed but I should go to bed.

No it's irritating more than offensive, unless — as you say — it happens constantly.

I think the most offensive were Mick Hucknall and Elton John.

My dad's nickname at work was Joe 90, so I don't mind that one at all. Plus it's really quite accurate, so...

I don't get looks comparison. I get voice comments. The checkout girl at the grocery store turned to my wife once and said "Does he really talk like that?"

    Couple of things.

An old school friend who lives in Texas is flying in to NYC tomorrow and flying home on Sunday. Whether he actually makes it here tomorrow will depend on the bomb cyclone thingy, but we've made plans for Saturday as though everything will be back to somewhat normal by then. Except that it's going to be super cold, which triggers my asthma symptoms. We made plans for lunch, which would have been nice, only today he messaged to say that he forgot about having matinee tickets for Saturday, so could we do brunch instead. Ugh. I don't like eating breakfast or anything else before noon anywhere but the privacy of my home. I have a routine and my system doesn't like it when I break that routine. At this point, I will genuinely be surprised if I don't make my excuses and stay home. Who comes to New York in January??

The other thing is weird, and a little upsetting. Today while I was working and Teddy was asleep in his bed next to my desk, he started crying. It was a really strange cry that I've never heard him do before, like he was hurt or extremely sad. I looked down and he appeared to be asleep, but he had his back to me, so I couldn't see his eyes. I very softly put my hand on his back and looked over him to see if his eyes were open. He kind of looked up at me, so I picked him up and held him for a minute. He seemed fine.

Even if he was only dreaming, it makes me feel sad that he would be dreaming about something that was obviously distressing to him. He should be dreaming about bacon or running through a field of puppies or something. Poor Teddy.
