Check out the tens of dozens of videos on Twitter of sickeningly violent aggression from the Guardia Civil against people of all ages none of whom seem to be doing anything more than protesting/trying to vote.
How anyone can justify this violence is beyond me, although some are trying their damndest

In answer to your question, it seems some police are firing at random people now:

Of course, these are "clashes” according to the BBC ...

Also, some stuff on Twitter etc. that suggest it's more the Policia Nacional than Guardia Civil? I say that not knowing much about the differences apart from what I can guess.

And ever before the police moved in, the Catalans were described as "separatists", which I've only generally seen applied to terrorist groups, rather than political activists.

Seen videos of the Catalan fire brigade protecting civilians from the Guardia Civil and now clips of fights breaking out between Catalan police (els mossos) confronting the Guardia Civil too.

Inca : you'll be fine. It'll be a lively atmosphere to be sure but not a violent one by then I reckon. It will actually be a good time to be there

PM of Belgium has now condemned Spanish State Violence. Wonder how long France and Germany will go on treating this as a mere internal matter? These are EU citizens whose heads are being trampled.

Excellent statement by Ada Colau calling on Rajoy to resign.

Do the useless and dangerous PSOE have a position on this? Is their Young Turk New Broom still standing by Rajoy? I’d be worried the PP bastards will dissolve Parliament and call new elections, rather than let the other parties try to scrabble a coalition against him. Maybe this horrible shite is playing really well to España Profunda. Fucker could win a landslide, then it will reek of Yugoslavia late eighties. Notes of cordite in the wind.

PSOE fairly limp, if my limited Spanish is anything to go by - blaming Puigdemont before Rajoy, and just calling for calm and dialogue:

Total silence from both the Irish government and President Higgins to date.

But this is primarily the fault of puigdemont, what you are seeing now is the point. This is beyond their wildest dreams, lending legitimacy to what was a kind of farcical referendum, that wasn't really going to get anywhere or achieve anything.

Corbyn Cable, Sturgeon, Wood, and Lucas have all made statements condemning the violence .

The British Foreign Office has said "The referendum is a matter for the Spanish government and people. We want to see Spanish law and the Spanish constitution respected and the rule of law upheld. Spain is a close ally and a good friend, whose strength and unity matters to us."
